What went wrong here?

One thing I liked here was the creative art design and the sets. I also like all the creative fun angles especially in the tunnel scene.

Also the fun 'era in between T2 and Jurassic Park...cgi looks very interesting here on screen.

In this case CGI 1992.

That damn plot with all the horrid prisoners and no hero to root for and the awful ending [the hero of the VERY FAMOUS 2 FIRST FILMS also ruined].

This could have been something special.

No Newt and Ripley shooting down Aliens. That's fine.

But that would have been much better and probably more entertaining than this film.

Which left almost all theaters in the U.S in less than 2 months.

Based on the assembly that is as close to a directors cut as we are likely to see, I don't think anything went wrong. This film is just a totally different take on the ideas. Alien was one thing (horror movie on a spaceship). Aliens was another thing (Military action film with monsters). Alien3 is a brutal, nihilistic horror film, and a perfect place to end the series. Good thing they didn't make any more.

reply

Of course they did though, right?

They made another sequel 4 or 5 years later.

reply

I get the whole horror vs action...or trying to mingle the both together.

But this was a big disappointment at the time.

I can't remember correctly...but I know FOX released the movie six long, very long years after Aliens.

And there was "Lethal Weapon 3", "Batman Returns" and yes...it actually happened, "Honey, I blew up the Kid"

I know I'm forgetting some others that siphoned away audiences, by it large or medium or small.

This was never a film outside of the opening that was going to ever generate anything.

Especially since our hero had her stomach blown wide open while committing suicide at a prison full of rapist, child molesters and murderers.

But leave it to 20th Century Fox in May of 1992 for at least trying..

I found it...May 22nd 1992:

I forgot about the Ron Howard-Tom Cruise-Nicole Kidman epic movie.

And Pauly Shore!

reply

"Far and Away"...that was a big deal back then. And next week, "Patriot Games" and "Sister Act".

reply

"This could have been something special."

It was.
It also just wasn't for you.

Doesn't make the film bad.
It has its flaws, certainly, but the Alien³ hate is 99% bandwagon hating and nothing else.

reply

It was a good film your right. But it wasn't special.

The ending is awful. People hated that scene. So bad...they made another film trying to salvage the absurd sad, sad ending.

They never did.

Both films flopped.

Still, good art design. I liked the weird CGI. The score was good. Weaver being back was awesome. Fincher was a great pick in 1992. Was that the year MTV peaked before the Internet? But nobody ever knew who was in control.

And the blame for the financial failure was passed.

But the script was awful! You could throw 50 million dollars into a pile of dog shit...and then it becomes a pile of worthless dog shit once valued at 50 million dollars but now just shit.

Only the fringe fans of the Alien series can truly appreciate it, like myself.

But it's still only a ** star film, maybe ** 1/2.

And still a disappointment.

reply

What was bad about the ending?
Who hated it, who is "people"?
I am also people, and I liked the ending. I think it made perfect sense and was quite poetic.

If you thought a series like Alien would have a happy ending... you weren't paying attention! xD
At least Ripley got to go under her own terms and achieved her goal of the company not getting their hands on the xenomorph.

People...

https://web.archive.org/web/20040613011819/http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&id=alien3.htm

People existed in 1992. And they rejected the movie. And people hated the reboot/reimaging/remake decades later.

You and I are both people communicating over the Internet.

We are people.

1. The film flopped.
2. The film still has a low IMDB rating
3. The film isn't very liked in 2022
4. People.

So instead of answering that one relevant question, you instead decided to sarcastically answer the one that was less relevant and obviously pointing out that there are also people that adore that movie for it's strong points.

Too bad.

reply

Wait!

You were the one who asked, who the "people" were?

As if a history revisionist could just paint away all the "people"..

reply

I know, hence I said: "you instead decided to sarcastically answer the one that was less relevant and obviously pointing out that there are also people that adore that movie for it's strong points."

So why inform me that it was me who asked?

Keep skipping the point, I don't care.

1) It didn't flop. Check your facts. It just wasn't received well in the USA. It actually made more money than Aliens at the time.

People existed in 1992. And they rejected the movie.

No. some people (mainly the USA) rejected it. Get a globe and you will see the world is more than just the USA.

reply

Nothing went wrong, They moved away from the pew!pew! and back to the bleaker darker slower atmosphere of the first one.

Look at the drastic weekend. Weekend after weekend.

The film is only interesting because it fails.

I concur, it's a pretty good movie.

But to see a studio pour so much money into the franchise.

reply

What went wrong was no Hicks and no Newt. The audience didn't like that their characters were killed off. I'm sure it would have went over much better had they been in the movie. Even if Hicks was killed by the alien during the movie. Not having those 2 important characters pissed the audience off.

reply

What went wrong here? Simply EVERYTHING!!!

reply

"cgi looks very interesting here on screen"

IIRC, the only cgi in the movie was the alien head cracks after the water was dumped on it towards the end if the film.

reply

Some good stuff some bad stuff but mostly doesnt feel connected to the prior mythology. Thats whats wrong I think.
