Best musical score ever? If not, who?

Vangelis's score makes this truly transcendant. I myself have seen many films and have yet to hear a more beautiful mix of picture and sound as here.
Robbed of an oscar. Better than the year's contenders... better than most scores in film history too. Any other contenders for the title?

it's good but here are two that are better:

1) The Sweet Hereafter - score by Michael Danna

2) The Draughtsman's Contract - score by Michael Nyman

i bought the cd several months ago and i listen to it here at work atleast one or twice a week...it has to be atleast one of the greatest scores ever...

1492 is one of my very favorite film scores. I LOVE the last track, "Into Eternity." Truly transcendental.

Well... with all this talk about the 1492 score, I am going to have to finally go out and buy it (too bad it isn't on iTunes).

You could NOT be any more correct, M0rl0ck! Alexander should have been nominated and is an absolutely great film score.

If this soundtrrack does anything for you, then you definitely need to check out Voices of Light: An Oratorio for Jeanne d'Arc, by Richard Einhorn, it's the music that is set ot the new DVD version of the 1920's french film La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc.

I love this soundtrack and I absolutely weep at the Joan of Arc one, you do, however, need to see the movie (which is silent, so all you ever hear is just the music) to fully appreciate the amazingness of the music. Pluas all the words that are sung are taken from female writers in the middle ages, and a few straight from letters from Jeanne d'Arc, pretty cool.

That sounds really cool!

which edition of the film? Criterion?

i'm surprised no one has even mentioned the Donnie Darko original score. it's not the best ever, but michael andrews' piano pieces are utterly beautiful...and the scarier stuff...the freaky ringing noises etc haunt my dreams!

reply

Yea, I like the Donnie Darko soundtrack too, although I wouldn't call it my favourite. That's so hard to do anyway since there are so many great soundtracks and composers out there. I'll just name a few whose soundtracks I consistently adored;

Obviously Vangelis, love 1492. It truely immerses you in the film and the timeframe. The same goes for Blade Runner, brilliant.

Think Jerry Goldsmith has done great soundtracks aswell. Be it Planet of the Apes, Alien, Basic Instinct and probably some I'm missing now.

John Williams and Hans Zimmer ofcourse, both are great too. Also think Hans was robbed for Gladiator. I mean seriously everyone knows the soundtrack, it often runs as background for all kinda programs, documentaries etc. and was a huge success but the Academy knew better...

Love James Horner's soundtracks too. Like Swing Kids, Braveheart, The Name of the Rose...

Thomas Newman for American Beauty and Shawshank Redemption.

I like the LOTR music aswell, but that's about the only soundtrack I know of Howard Shore so I wouldn't exactly list him. Oh, and John Barry for Dances with Wolves and The Specialist.

If Vangelis borrowed from an old Spanish theme, then thanks to Vangelis for making it better known.
I was amazed by Quincey Jones' score for The Color Purple (one of my all-time favorites). Then i saw an obscure movie called Our Mother's House made much earlier, which had the same theme!
Perhaps QJ saw that movie and decided to copy the theme for TCP. That may be cheating, but then it was also a very smart move. And thanks to that, TCP has a great score.

Heard of

Blade Runner
The Mission
Black Rain
Karate Kid

I normally used to listen to quite heavy electronic music, indus, Body,etc...as well as Vangelis and Jarre and eventually Enya.

I let go off of her a while back, some melodies, piano and the stuff, Jarre still ok (Oxygen and Equinoxe absolute masterpieces), but Vangelis...oh dear I completely stopped listening to other stuff for a while now, don't know if it has something to do with the age, but I can't live without my Vangelis music...

Now, I am chasing after all the stuff I have missed in the past, tracking down obscure tracks, albums, etc, but the reward will be great!

1492 best soundtrack ever.
