Best musical score ever? If not, who?

Vangelis's score makes this truly transcendant. I myself have seen many films and have yet to hear a more beautiful mix of picture and sound as here.
Robbed of an oscar. Better than the year's contenders... better than most scores in film history too. Any other contenders for the title?

I can't believe there are only two submissions for John Barry!! (Both for 'Dances With Wolves.) My all-time favorite would have to be one of his scores, but I can't really decide which... the list is so long. Possibly 'You Only Live Twice,' or 'Body Heat' (or 'Out of Africa?') I also have to give honorable mentions to Bernard Herrman, Elmer Bernstein, and Erich Korngold. I get a chuckle out of most of the responses here, because it seems as though if the film has not been done in the last twenty years, then it doesn't count. I hate to burst the bubble of the Gen-X'ers on the web, but soundtracks have been written since the birth of film, and there are some real masterpieces in a lot of the early (and middle) years.

interesting someone acknowledged mulholland dr-i also noticed awesome, powerful score.

also big fan of jurassic park,LOTR,legends of the fall.(also indecent proposal theme-john barry deserves to be with more rememberable film)

HOWEVER most outstanding score ever written i think is The Mission by ennio morricone. All great but best noted for Gabriel's Oboe, which also get my vote for best individual piece from a movie.

uk classicfm radio do hall of fame each year, gabriel's oboe is about 4th highest 'film music' after star wars, lotr etc which is remarkable considering how much more unknown the mission is (not many votes on imdb)

Funny thing is I'm listening to the soundtrack at work on my ipod. Great piece indeed! What are people's favorite tracks? I like Conquest of Paradise and the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria (last one)

Definitely one of them. The lead theme is one of my favourite pieces of film music ever, certainly.
Vangelis is a genius.

I am also a big a Vangelis fan. I'd have to say that either 'Conquest of Paradise ' or 'West Across the Ocean Sea' takes the cake for me. If I had to say which soundtrack is the best out of all Vangelis' work, I'd have to go with Blade Runner first, 1492 second, Chariots of Fire third and Alexander fourth. I know he's done some others but I don't have them in complete form and thus am not in a position to really determine their personal worth.

I'm a big fan of the soundtrack of Conan the barbarian. Basil Poledouris' music for that movie is very underated

reply

This is indeed the best musical score ever. Period!

I haven't stopped listening to it for the last 13 years, and believe me I listen to a hell lot of music, and nothing come close to this score.

The other one for me, will be "Blade Runner", sorry but I am truly in love with this album.
I will also rate Ennio Morricone's "My name is nobody" as one of the best, and of course "The Good, the bad and the ugly","The Mission",etc...

I am dreaming about a 5.1 edition of "1492 - Conquest of Paradise"...oh dear!

reply

yep, Basil did his best job there, love that OST!

we really shouldnt include such movies as 2001 and excalibur, because those arent soundtracks. wagner or strauss never wrote those peices for a movie, and they should be respected as a seperate form of art
