Best musical score ever? If not, who?

Vangelis's score makes this truly transcendant. I myself have seen many films and have yet to hear a more beautiful mix of picture and sound as here.
Robbed of an oscar. Better than the year's contenders... better than most scores in film history too. Any other contenders for the title?

My favorite would be Fargo, Carter Burwell.

It surely is a fantastic score.....a true pleasure:-)

hey people, check out some of Vangelis' other soundtracks, like L'apocalypse d'Animaux, La Fete Sauvage and Ignacio. Those three are in my humble opinion :) even better than BR or Alexander. Oh, and there's Antarctica( you surely know the main theme), Bitter Moon and the sampler OST Cosmos, which works as a collection of some of Vangelis' early great songs. Someone said Vangelis didn't do many soundtracks. The truth is he didn't do soundtracks to well known films, but he actually wrote far more than were released, and fans of his work like me know and love them. There's no debate that he is one of the greatest composers of all time, and those others mentioned before, although having achieved some high moments, were slightly repetitive.

Best soundtracks of all time IMHO, in no order

Gladiator - Hans Zimmer
Conan - Basilis Poledouris
Star Wars - John Williamss
Star Trek - Jerry Goldsmith
1492 - Vangelis
The Mission - Ennio Moriccone

============================
"Computer?"
"Scotty, use the keyboard."
"Keyboard? duh!"

I agree with those, but I would add:
The hours and Kundun, by Philip Glass
Alexander by Vangelis
Mulholland Drive, Angelo Badalamenti
The house of the Spirits (by Hans Zimmer, and often ignored)

reply

Alexander Nevsky. I'm surprised only one or two people mentioned it.

Yes. i believe either he's the best at least one of the best composers in movie industry(altough i believe he's bigger than that).1492 is undoubtly has one of the finest score ever written for a movie. Most people think that the second track(the conquest of paradise)is the best piece of the score.Sure, it is so powerful and impressive like you feel an overdose in your body, but according to me, the sixth track(west across the ocean sea)is the best piece all over the score. You can actually feel the hope ,desperation ,agony and the deliverence that columbus had throught the ocean cross. It is so stunning that causing the awakening of every human emotion you have in your soul, i believe every human being on the face of this planet should listen this track once in their lives.
About being the best film composer issue, i must say, yes Vangelis made less movie score but the quantity is not important, the real important thing is the quality, at least i believe so and it won't change for me till someone beats the score of 1492 in the musical sense.

Another vote por Conan the barbarian in number 1.

For scores by Philip Glass, i would vote The Thin Blue Line and The Remains of the Day.
For scores by Giorgio Moroder - Midnight Express and American Gigolo.
For scores by Georges Delerue - The Black Stallion Returns and Steel Magnolias.

The Last Temptation of Christ also has a brilliant score by Peter Gabriel

the musical piece for this film was amazing and I recommend Baba Yetu

Easily Vangelis's best. The last track, "Into Eternity," is worth the price of the CD.

Well, this sucks.

Actually - although this is a fine fine score by Vangelis, I prefer 'The Bounty' soundtrack....

Trivia : Vangelis auditioned for rock band YES. Job eventually went to Patrick Moraz (1973)

Vangelis has stated that he doesn't like his music to be used as Film Soundtracks.....(Why?) Hence no official release of 'The Bounty.'

other great soundtracks worthy of a mention:

THE GREAT ESCAPE / THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

THE BIG COUNTRY

WATERLOO

TOTAL RECALL

PAPILLON

MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY

BEN HUR

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

ROAD TO PERDITION

ZULU

BORN FREE

GUNS OF NAVARONE

THE ALAMO (TIOMKIN VERS)

I forgot to mention Nino Rota's music for "Romeo and Juliet". Beautiful.

I LOVE this soundtrack, but didn't like the movie.

*I like these calm little moments before the storm. It reminds me of Beethoven. Can you hear it?*
