I wish i knew people who love this film

I came across this movie on cable, some weird channel that doesn't even exist anymore, like an IFC type channel. Around 2005ish. I just fell in love with it. I watch it a few times a year and I connect with so much of it. But no one I know has every even heard of it.

Even my cousins who actually grew up in the 80s and were huge River Phoenix fans, (I was born in 1984 and only knew of Stand By Me before he died), they hadn't seen it either.

And I'm kind of embarrassed to show it to people to because I identify with it so much, but I wish I knew people who I could watch this with and quote the lines, and order like Rose at restaurants with.

Oh well.

This is one of Rivers' movie that I love watching over and over! So simple but yet so romantic.

This movie was great. The simple camera shots, the soundtrack with all those great Dylan songs and Lily Taylor was amazing.

I remember being hesitant at first to see it in the theater because even though it starred River Phoenix, it had absolutely no marketing/publicity around it. I found out the movie even existed when I got to the theater and saw the poster. I think they marketed it more toward the indie crowd than the mainstream crowd, so it didn't draw numbers and was forgotten by the masses almost immediately - which is too bad because it was very well done and one of the few movies that I've actively sought out on DVD.

I love this movie… then and now.
And I will always miss River Phoenix.

I first saw this on cable in the mid 90s.

Great underrated movie.

It's a great film. Have watched it multiple times and always thoroughly enjoy it. It's definitely one of the most romantic films ever made and it feels very real. Not sure why it's not more widely known.

Aw, I love this movie!
I was also born in 1984 and the first time I saw River was also in Stand By Me (years later, after it aired on TV). Eventually I saw him in Running On Empty, My Own Private Idaho, Indiana Jones, and a couple of other smaller things, like his TV cameos. But I didn't actually see Dogfight until I was much older, and was surprised at how much I loved it (I thought it was going to be really sappy and lame, like some older version of She's All That but no, Dogfight was actually good).

Don't be embarrassed to show this to people! If they're good people, they'll see the heart in the story and love it too!

You know me -- now who are you? :)

I was 23 and had just moved to Vancouver, Bc from film school back east.
I knew nada in Vancouver (but had an Uncle in Victoria on the big island.)
It was Thanksgiving weekend (Canadian calendar) when I saw it @ a rep cinema house.
I was blown away by Ms. Savoca's work...by Bob Comfort's honest screenplay.
Jealous, inspired to write better, to love and see better, clearer -- and that ending song -- %^$#@!! :)
First time I ever heard John Fahey on guitar was the closing credits to 'Dogfight.'
And I was fighting back tears....the weight of his nimble fingers on those nylon strings, killed me!

Happy to meet another inspired fan,

I understand. It is natural to want to connect with people who like what you like. This movie is a gem. Full of heart. Maybe you can share it with your close friends?
