I wish i knew people who love this film

I came across this movie on cable, some weird channel that doesn't even exist anymore, like an IFC type channel. Around 2005ish. I just fell in love with it. I watch it a few times a year and I connect with so much of it. But no one I know has every even heard of it.

Even my cousins who actually grew up in the 80s and were huge River Phoenix fans, (I was born in 1984 and only knew of Stand By Me before he died), they hadn't seen it either.

And I'm kind of embarrassed to show it to people to because I identify with it so much, but I wish I knew people who I could watch this with and quote the lines, and order like Rose at restaurants with.

Oh well.

Attention spans have waned too much since then. Some people expect computer generated scenes and now have trouble with a raw, eclectic film like this one.

I wish I could see this movie. I was fascinated by its premise since I heard about it back in 1991, but unfortunately, being a Brit I never got to see it because the film was never screened in the UK and it never seems to have been broadcast on TV.

I love unorthodox bittersweet romance films though, and Lily Taylor is one of my favourite actresses, and River Phoenix was always impressive during his tragically short career.

They made a musical based on the movie. You can see it on youtube, but it lacks the heart and soul of the movie. It really was River and Lili who made the movie. It couldn't have been done by any other actors.

I think I have a copy on video somewhere.

I live in London, where do you live in the UK?

reply

You can watch it online for free at VIDZI or other such websites.

You can know me if you want! Anyone who loves this film is truly awesome in my eyes.

This is gonna *beep* do for him what "Jade" did for David Caruso.

I need to have a viewing party for my friends. This is one of my favorites. I was watching it on my ipod once at work during break and I didn't even have the headphones in, I was laughing cuz I already knew every line. And my friend was like "Pay attention to me!" Lol

Well count me among the awesome. I've seen this several times. One of many influences on me as a young man. And a former mild obsession with EG Daily. (Remarkable that she was in Pee Wee's Big Adventure)

I agree. No one seems to know this flick. I feel like I know something they don't though.

Boy, River was MY LIFE, he was only 6 months older than me & I was unhealthily obsessed. This film is far & away the one I relate to most, being a "dog" myself.

Running On Empty & Stand by Me, (to me), were easily his best films, but Dogfight is still a very touching, beautifully acted film, & it brings back such memories.

Still amazed that we lost River so young & to drugs but as least he introduced Lili to us. I still look at her & think, you actually got to snog River Phoenix hehe !!

I will join this group. I don't remember Dogfight ever in theatres, I only heard of it on Siskel & Ebert, way back.

I rented it decades ago, and still remember it. Once in a blue moon it is on some cable channel.

I just watched Dogfight for the third time and was reminded of what a great film it is. The writing, direction, acting, and set design are remarkable. The scenes play out like those in a stage play, given time to develop. Every performance is pitch-perfect, and the acting by Taylor and Phoenix are as truthful and vulnerable as anything I've ever seen recorded on film. The screenplay by the late Bob Comfort was based on his experiences as a Marine.

I grew up in the 1970s and have never lost my taste for adult movies that rely on the basics and not noise, nudity, and CGI. This movie is a gem, and it's available on DVD.

What a great thread and how wonderful to meet such kindred spirits.

I am also of the River era - early 70s born and in my teens and early 20s, River took up a lot of my time. I am always interested to hear from people who became fans after his death, but I tell you, even 20 years on the pure horror of him dying so tragically still hurts my heart...I so miss him and remember the thrill of waiting for his next movie, interview, watching him grow up..wondering what he would do next

Anyway....as to Dogfight.my all time favourite movie. Years ago I bought 2 DVD copies from Amazon UK so glad I did because it seems it may be out of production.

20 years ago when it first came out, I would put on the VHS and make my friends and family watch it. Only a few of them got the subtle charm of the movie.
