Even through his own faults, I really liked Doughboy. Even though he was a gangbanging thug, you could see deep down the guy had a good heart that never gotten the love and approval of his mother or the opportunities in life his younger brother had.
You can see that Doughboy cared about other people, especially his brother, Ricky. But Ricky was too self-centered to realize or appreciate the things his brother done for him. Although Ferris was the main antagonist in the film, the other was Ricky and Doughboy's mother, Brenda.
Brenda was a lazy, no good, whore of a mother that did not try to parent until later in her kids' lives. She clearly loved Ricky, and I think to an extent, even Doughboy. However, Doughboy's father was a mean, abusive thug and she saw it in Doughboy. She hated him so bad, she grew an undeserved resentment of Doughboy. Later in life when she turned her life around, she resented Doughboy even more when Doughboy did become as she feared. But not wanting to accept the fact that she played a big part of what Doughboy became because she did not show him the proper love and guidance she gave to Ricky.
Doughboy loved his family and friends, especially his brother and even his mother, who would never reciprocate. I would love to think that when not long after Ricky's death after Doughboy passes away, she realizes the mistakes she made as a mother and made better choices in helping to raise her grandson. And since Tre was Ricky and Doughboy's best friend, I think she starts to look at him like her son and becomes motherly towards him. In short, I hope Doughboy's death made her come to the realization of the bad choices she has made and was what made her become a better person.
