Yeah i know he was a gangsta but don't you think he had feelings too? And just wanted to be loved by someone? Being as though his mother never showed him any love at all. And took favor to Ricky over him? Do you think he needed someone in his life to care about him?
Yes i agree with you, i remember when him and Ricky got into a fight in front of the house. And she started slapping on him like he was the only one in the wrong. A mother should never act the way she did. Choosing children no matter if one of them does have more potential then the other. He always had Ricky's back no matter what. And i doubt that Ricky even appreciated him at all. So yeah honestly i didn't really care for Ricky. While it was sad that he was murdered still i didn't care for him. Probably because of the situation and how his mother acted.
Yes i do understand exactly what you mean. It seems as though no matter what he did he was always looked at in that way. Even though he always had Ricky's back. I don't think his mother really loved him either. It just shows you how life is really though. I actually love Doughboy's character i love observing him. Ricky i am tired of him and it's because of how he was portrayed as "the perfect son" I wish Doughboy would have had a chance to change and had someone in his life that could have helped him. I believe underneath all the toughness he was actually lonely and had a lot of pain. And the way he handled it was by drinking and acting out the way he did and being a gangster. And when Ricky was killed i think that was the final straw. That really hurt him a lot i think and took him over the edge. Notice even after the drive by when him and his friends shot the guys that killed his brother. He got out of the car and shot one of them multiple times. He had reached his breaking point. I would also like to point out when him and Ricky were talking on the porch. And Ricky asked Doughboy to go to the store to get some corn meal. Dough said he wasn't and so Ricky asked Tre to go with him. And that's when Ricky said a smart remark to Doughboy he got pissed, And they got into the fight and of course their mother took Ricky's side. She slapped Doughboy and didn't do anything to Ricky.
I think that he is a very complicated character. It's obvious that he needed his mother's love and when he didn't get it because, as you said, she favored Ricky he turned to the gang as he felt their love. Deep down I don't think he really cared about his mother in return for her not loving him but he certainly loved his brother. I think he proves that in the scene where, instead of driving off after shooting the "villains" responsible for Ricky's murder he got out so that, I think, he could look at the other character (sorry I don't remember his name) when he killed him. I love Doughboy's character and the complexities that are there in Ice Cube's performance.
God you can have Megan Fox...Give us back Vivien Leigh
With the exception of Furious, Doughboy was the most interesting character in the movie. It's little wonder Ice Cube became a star after giving that beautiful, nuanced performance.
I agree his character was very interesting, and i am glad that other people see that as well. I can never get enough of him so glad to know that not everyone's attention is so focused on Ricky.
What makes Doughboy so much more interesting is that he was supposed to be the antithesis of everything his brother was portrayed to be, the good son, when in fact Doughboy WAS the good son. It can be assumed that Doughboy has no kids, although he spoke of having a girlfriend @ his coming home party. His only crime- hanging out with his n'er do well friends... Kinda like Craig on Friday, except this was mor dramaful and their was no male figure in the home.
Whereas Ricky, The "Perfect" son, was anything but. He had even more flaws than his brother that his mother failed to see or conveniently overlooked. He was a teenage father whose babymama lived in the home. His mother promoted the dysfunction in him, but she thought it was normal because she probably did the same thing. She overlooked his irresponsible and reckless behavior for his talent in footballl and thought it was gonna be their ticket out the hood.
Doughboy would have fared well with a little more guidance, under the wings of someone like Furious. He needed nurturing and love and never got it.
The mother was the most trife of all. She failed BOTH of her children. Instead of nurturing them equally, she allowed her anger about her own choices to skew her thoughts and feelings towards her own children and it cost them both of their lives.
I remember talking to one of my friends 2 years after this movie came out. I told him that the real villain was the mother. I always thought that if she would have given Doughboy at least 1/2 of the love that she gave Ricky he would have turned out differently. And I agree about the Furious reference. If he would have also helped out, I think that DB would have turned out differently. That's what happens to a lot of people. If they have somebody that cares for them(it doesn't even have to be a relative) that can make the world of difference.
I liked Ricky, but I have to agree that it did get old w/the mother showing favoritism towards him. I guess it's because of the football thing. He wasn't a saint. Like somebody said, he was a teenage father & the girlfriend lived w/them. I think that because he stayed in school & had the football thing going for him, his mother saw his potential. I really liked despite their differences how DB looked out for Ricky. I don't know if Ricky ever realized or appreciated this.
I really agree with everyone and what they have to say on this subject it's so nice to see what other people thought about this. Ricky had his flaws but his mother like someone said just probably overlooked Dough Boy and it's sad. If she hadn't maybe he would have been a lot different. It's important for children to have someone in their lives that care about them. It can make the difference in how they turn out when they are older. Ricky's mother always favored Ricky more then Dough boy. So i blame her also she was the problem and the reason everything turned out the way that it did. Notice that the star child Ricky was the one to be killed first. Even though Dough Boy was killed later on. I wonder if Dough Boys death effected her as bad as Ricky's death did.
Darren was the example of an unloved, uncared for and untaught child, he numbs the pain in his life with alcohol and clings to the only thing he knows, street life.
He very much had feelings, and deep down he wanted to be loved too, he speaks to it in his final scene.
Unlike other "growing up in the hood" movies that came out after this one, he was a very deep and complex character.
Wayne Enterprises buys and sells companies like Stark Industries
I think it's rather poignant that the grown-up Doughboy never had a scene with Furious. Think it's evident that the absence of love and guidance from his mother, was a major cause of his undoing.
Doughboy was never given the discipline nor the love he needed. I dont like to make excuses for people, but he was obviously hiding loneliness and pain. He always looked out for Ricky and even avenged him. When his brother was shot, he tried to hug his mother..only to have her lash out at him! That was the most defining moment about what was beneath it all to me.
"How's the steak?" "It was poisoned (argh)...and a little rare" (collapses).
Terrible parenting. Not that it excuses his life of crime (it's a reason, not an excuse), but it's no wonder a kid is gonna have issues if his mom treats him like that.
Jackass, nothing you said made any sense. Since your not black you don't have to worry about black problems? You just worry about white problems? I find it funny that the people who run around telling people to take responsibility for their actions never takes responsibility for theirs.
doughboy's a great character to me. he's very human and Ice Cube's performance makes you care about him. sure, doughboy's a criminal and he's antagonistic, but he's also protective and loyal. no scene is more heartbreaking than doughboy's mom inaccurately blaming him for ricky's death and his last scene with tre suggests that his act of vengeance left him empty (even if he wouldn't have done anything different). doughboy and ricky get into a fistfight, but only minutes later, when doughboy catches onto ricky being in danger, he doesn't hesitate, immediately running to his brother's rescue. that said, he's not entirely sympathetic. he's sexist, belligerent, loud, and largely unapologetic for the person he is. this is a result of being unloved and put down as a youngster, but the damage is done. bottom line, i love the character. always have and always will. he may be flawed, but he was far from soulless.
About him being sexist...I wonder if Singleton wrote his character that way because of his mom being such a horrible biitch and it messed up his view and respect for women.
Obviously lots of people with mothers are mysgonistic too, but in this movie, Doughboy is the main one who always berates women by calling them hoes and bitcches, and he's the one who had a terrible, verbally abusive mother
I felt bad for doughboy at times, but perhaps if he did something for his mother to be proud of, she would have showed him more respect. He spent half his life in and out of the pen. I felt bad for the mother losing both her sons, one right after the other.
"I felt bad for doughboy at times, but perhaps if he did something for his mother to be proud of, she would have showed him more respect."
You got it all wrong. It's not the sons job to make the mother proud, it's the mothers job to make the son proud. Doughboy needed his mother more than Rick did and because he wasn't the outstanding son that she wanted she gave him no support or encouragement. It was her fault that her son turned out the way he did, he had no father and the one person that he needed most in his life would call him stuff like a fat *beep*. You can't create a monster and than cry when he crumbles a few buildings.
She was a total bitch to him when he was a kid, not only after he was getting in trouble with the law.
He was just a kid and she was telling him he "wasn't *beep* and would "never amount to *beep* And she was putting him down because of issue she had with Doughboy's father.
She couldn't stop spreading her legs and getting knocked up and took out her anger towards one of the men on her child.

A verbally/mentally abusive and horrible mother.
Agreed, she really was.

Because she was a disgusting character and a terrible mother.
She gets pregnant by two guys and doesn't like one of them, so in return, she treats her/his SON like *beep*
She takes it out on the poor kid and is mentally abusive to him, tells him he'll never amount to anything and he's worthless, because she had issues with his father.
