Why didn't the parents get mad at Uncle Frank for calling Kevin a little jerk?

I know if my brother or sister talked to my child like that I would let them know that I'm not gonna put up with it.

reply

And the parents were paying for Frank's vacation and the pizza. I would have slapped Frank and left him HOME ALONE.

Kevin left alone with Uncle Frank. That wouldn't turn out well.

reply

Even if he was?

I always thought it was funny when Kevin has the flashback the next morning and he imagines Uncle Frank saying it like this: "Look what you DID, you little JERK." If you watch the scene from the night before, Frank doesn't say it like that lol

reply

At first I thought it was Peter who said "Look what you did you little JERK" in Kevin's flashback, I agree the way it was said in the flashback scene was a lot more cruel, I also don't get why we never saw what Buzz told him earlier in the movie.

reply

My sister and I used to always reenact those flashbacks. Every character that shows up is exaggerated and say things far more obnoxiously than they actually said it. And Buzz just randomly talks about feeding Kevin to his spider which did not happen at the start of the movie (although it could very well have been something he said at some other point in time).

reply

Well we remember things differently so I thought it was clever of the director to do that.

reply

I always had noticed Buzz didn't say that in the movie either. It makes me wonder if there was a deleted scene of him saying that and they happened to like it it so much they kept him saying it in that scene.

reply

yeah i remember that too.

reply

If you notice the scene where they talk about who is going to pay the pizza guy, Frank says he only has travelers checks, and then Kate (Kevin's mom) says "That's okay Frank, I've got cash", not shocked at all that he isn't willing to chip in. I think that scene is very telling in that the mom and dad pretty much know that Frank would say something like that, and that probably isn't the first time he has done so.

reply

I had never put 2 and 2 together with the mom’s tone and I’ve seen this movie a million times. I like how the movie crammed so many family dynamics into so little time.

reply

Honestly, the parents were idiots in letting the dad's brother get away with everything, and a lot of people in the room were feeling that way about Kevin because he was the family scapegoat. It's like, Buzz gets away with everything, but Kevin is always being blamed for all the problems in the family. It's a very unfair setup, and no wonder Kevin acts out all the time.

reply

It's unfair to us, but this film is really for kids, where **everything** is unfair as far as they're concerned!! I love the part in Christmas Story where Ralph fantasizes about his parent's horrified reaction and guilt to his blindness due to soap poisoning.

This is back when other grown ups were allowed to discipline children and humanity was better for it. Whether you think Uncle Frank was a jerk or not he was an authority figure to all those kids and disciplining an authority figure for shaming a kid for his bad actions undermines his authority tears apart the family.

If a kid does something bad and you berate the adult punishing him and baby the kid you get a country like we have now

reply

I don't consider what Frank did to be discipline. He just insulted the kid with no real punishment. Additionally, the child's parents are in the room so it's best just to let them handle the situation.

I mostly agree with your sentiment. The problem I have with the family in this case is that almost everyone there was acting like a bunch of douchebags. They were all pretty obnoxious. Kevin still needed to be called out, but his uncle was just as big of a cretan.

reply

It was satisfying when Kevin got to burn Uncle Frank in the sequel.
Wouldn't want to spoil your fun, Mr. Cheapskate.

reply

Please. He called him a little jerk for behaving like an idiot and ruining the dinner. It's not like he slapped him and called him an asshole.

Franks actions were perfectly fine.

reply

I disagree, CoachGainz. Frank is definitely the biggest jerk in the movie. Kevin's entire family are jerks, but Frank is the worst. I understand being frustrated because the dinner was ruined, but he had no right to call him a little jerk. He could've easily just said, "Look what you did!" But calling him a little jerk was way out of line.

reply

Sure he could have.

However, Frank's character was a grumpy old uncle and his lines/actions fit in with the character development. Further more he didn't do anything out of the norm for most american families considering the situation.

You are making the point that Frank's action was very over the top considering the situation and Kevin's family didn't react appropriately considering. But that's simply not the case.
