What is the worst Sean Connery movie?

The Avengers (1998) or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade?

"Medicine Man" makes "Last Crusade" look like "Macbeth."

reply

Never saw it but now I'm afraid to. I can't imagine a film being worse than Last Crusade.

reply

Medicine Man was terrible
Took a date to see it
Never saw her or this shitty movie again

reply

Are you mental? None of the movies mentioned so far hold a candle to Highlander II.

reply

You can't have seen many Connery films if you think Last Crusade is among his bad films.

The Avengers, First Knight, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Highlander II: The Quickening are among his most terrible movies, not by his fault, they’re just terrible movies due to lousy scripts, casting and direction.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is better than most of his 70's films too.

reply

I think the reason I hate Last Crusade so much is because it followed 2 of the greatest adventure movies ever and it was a really bad movie.

reply

Lol, “The reason I hate this movie is because it’s a really bad movie.”

Thanks for clearing that up.

reply

I love Sean, but he made some stinkers, and I think Zardoz takes the cake.

reply

I'll go ahead and say what everybody here is thinking. You have poor taste in movies, if you think Last Crusade is a bad movie.

reply

It's one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The plot is a rehash of Raiders, it focuses completely on really bad comedy, John Williams score is beyond underwhelming and the acting is atrocious, especially Alison Doody. For now I'm not even going to mention the Mickey Mouse joke. I'm not hating on Indiana Jones though, Raiders and Temple are two of my favorite movies of all time, Last Crusade is one big pile of crap.

The intro with River Phoenix? A beautiful introduction of the character as a youth, showing hs principles ("it belongs in a museum"), along with the relationship with his father, ending with a fantastic line.. "you lost today kid, but it doesn't mean you have to like it". The search for the holy grail is epic, and the chemistry between Ford and Connery is strong. The humour totally works every time I watch it, and the score is magnificent. Also, the father and son relationship, effectively built by the script, score and performances, meets its summit when Indy is reaching for the grail, and Sean is able to calm him with "Indiana, let it go..let it go". This gets me every time. But I will agree with you on one thing. Temple of Doom is great (and Raiders speaks for itself).

reply

WHAT??? Are you kidding me? River Phoenix was HORRIBLE. I cringe every time he says "this should be in a museum". I know the sequence is only like 10 minutes but it takes me at least an hour to get through it because I have to keep pausing, I can only take so much at a time. The chemistry between Ford and Connery was not strong, all it is is Ford being the straight character who is being serious and trying to get the accomplish the quest while Connery engages in Jar Jar antics as a means of comic relief. They completely botched the chemistry between Ford and Connery. The humor was pathetic, it wasn't funny and it was very juvenile. The first two had dark humor, they put a comedic spin on someone dying in a very brutal fashion and it worked, in Crusade we are reduced to Mickey Mouse jokes. The film was boring, lifeless and juvenile. I am also getting to the point where I pretend that only 2 Indy movies actually exist (Raiders and Temple).

I hear you, but 99% of people disagree with you on this. Sure, if you were talking about the horrendous Crystal Skull, I would get it, but this film? The best threequel of all time?

reply

Uh no, The Dark Knight Rises is the best threequel of all time and I can name several others that are better than Last Crusade, such as Return of the Jedi, Revenge of the Sith, Goldfinger, even Godfather Part III. It might be better than Robocop 3, I'll give you that. I didn't care for Crystal Skull, the CGI was horrendous and many of the stunts were beyond the realm of suspension of disbelief although it at least had some fun moments which I can't even say that Last Crusade has.

Yeah I realize many disagree with me, that still doesn't change my opinion, there is nothing anyone can say that will convince me that Last Crusade is even remotely watchable.

reply

Let me just get this straight.. you find Crystal Skull to be a better film than Last Crusade?

reply

Yes, although I dislike both of them.

reply

You havent done yourself a favor with this line :) .

No Indy film will ever beat "Raiders" (honestly, how many pop films in general have?) and, yes, I do agree to some extent that "Last Crusade," like "Temple," leans a little too heavily on the slapstick (the comedy in "Raiders," by comparison was much subtler). But, my quibbles aside, "Last Crusade" is a fun, endearing movie with a relationship between Indy and his pop at its core that is interesting and moving. I especially like the scene between Connery and Ford at the end -- Ford is reaching for the Grail, assuring his dad he can get it, and his dad, very gently tells him, foregoing the somewhat demeaning "Junior" for the first time: "Indiana, let it go." That moment has an emotional truth and depth to it that not many other moments in the series possess and it's because of this scene, and a few others like it in "Crusade," that make it a film I always make a point to revisit on occasion.

reply

Absolutely true. The amazing thing about Raiders was that Indy was still the hero, but only a inch away of the "dark side" of Belloq! Thats not the whiny way of darkness today movies mismatch with being a "deep" movie (like whiny Superman at all recent Superman movies). Thats a multilayered, but still honorable character. Really like Raiders cause of that reason. That was mostly gone with TOD and TLC (but still like both of them, cause they were so huge and exciting!).

reply

As far as I'm concerned Spielberg and Lucas made a movie called Raiders of the Lost Ark and then made a prequel called Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and that's where it ends.

reply

You know that Indy became a family man and nice guy in Indy II already ;) ? Short Round was there for a reason. So if you dislike the "Indy is now a nice guy" part of Indy III, then why like Indy II?

reply

"Temple of Doom" does have possibly the best exchange in the entire series:

Willie: Let's get out of here
Indy: Right. All of us.

In this brief but essential moment Indy's character completes his journey from selfish "fortune and glory" seeker to emancipator of slave children. It's also THE fist-pumping moment of the series.

reply

That was an amazing moment and John Williams was on his A-game during that scene as well.

reply

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the action set pieces are supreme (to this day, they show how effective old school action is). The opening chase on the train, the venice catacombs, and the boat chase. The plane sequence, the motorcycle chase and the tank stuff. And of course the famous ending with the old knight and the grail, at Petra, Jordan.

He was great in Last Crusade! But frankly I never saw his really bad ones.

reply

I got sick of his Jar Jar antics. Seriously during the Tank chase I expected him at some point to shout out "uh oh, Big Boomers, Mesa in Big Doodoo Dis Time"

reply

Screw you, TheUltimateHippo!

reply

Sean Connery made a lot of bad movies. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade isn't even in the top (or is that bottom) 5.

reply

Anyone mention "Zardoz"?

reply

Goldfinger
