Why Glenn Close?

I don't get it, she doesn't exactly ooz sex appeal. There must've been dozens of other beautiful actresses who could've played this part. Why did they go with Glenn?

reply

Her performance was simply jaw-dropping. I watched it for the first time a few days ago, and was in awe. Honestly, she should have had an Oscar. They changed the ending to make her character even less sympathetic, and still she did not come off as a completely one-dimensional bad guy. I think that was entirely Glenn Close's doing.

So glad they were brave enough to go for her although she doesn't quite fit the norm for conventional beauty. The stylists did a good job, though.

Really hope she gets her long overdue Oscar soon!

According to the trivia page on this movie, Elisabeth Shue was the first choice but she was committed to making Adventures in Babysitting. I like Shue but I think she would have been too young.

reply

Well Shue would've been a better choice. It's a shame she wasn't in it, I liked her performance in Leaving Las Vegas. Like I said, Close is a great actress, no doubt about it, but I can't really watch a movie with her clothes off, it just isn't her type of film.

reply

Omigod Elizabeth Shue, thank goodness they didn't cast her, quite the blandest actress in Hollywood!

reply

Glenn Close was actually you could say, playing against type at the time. Before Fatal Attraction, Glenn Close was typically the go-to actress if you wanted a warm, empathetic earth-mother type (as seen in The World According to Garp, The Natural, and The Big Chill).

reply

It does appear that numerous actresses were considered in addition to Close. Several were auditioned but apparently Close won the part.

I agree though, and I always wondered why they didn't cast a "prettier" actress in the role. That said, I think Close is an amazing actress. I just always wondered why Dan Gallagher would choose to have an affair with her. As others have pointed out though affairs are always more than about looks.

Even if it means me taking a chubby, I will suck it up!

reply

Michael Douglas probably had something to say about who was cast, too.

reply

I would've loved to see Demi Moore in the role. She would've nailed it.

reply

Yes, because sex is ALL about looks.
Next you idiots will be saying that only attractive people get raped.

reply

They do in films (Irreversible).

I agree. But cheating is sometimes about power/ego indeed: just because they can and feel entitled to the thrill of getting away with what they can (Tiger Woods).

Dan clearly felt that way. He had no clear obvious reason to cheat otherwise.

reply

she did, in Disclosure. and Moore seemed too young for Douglas to have been involved with her before he married

reply

I thought she was amazing.

reply

Maybe Close doesn't ooze sex appeal outside of this movie, but she definitely oozed it here. This is the sexiest Close has ever looked in a movie! Plus, you really needed someone who could act, and Close can do that in spades!

Glenn Close had to get a major make-over so she could be seen as sexy enough to play Alex Forrest in FATAL ATTRACTION. Before playing the iconic "Bunny Boiler", she was typecast as the mom:

She was more ambitious when it came to play Alex so she went through an extensive makeover which included a perm (which I wish she had kept for a longer time) and sexier outfits. She was also forty, an age which was seen as the end for actresses however Glenn Close made her first film when she was 35 so she was defying the odds from the start.

Well Glenn Close is an amazing actress. Honestly her looks do not distract me in this movie even though I don't find her attractive here.

What's odd to me is that she has looked quite pretty in other movies that were released in this time frame so I'm not really sure why she looks so unappealing here.

she doesn't exactly ooz sex appeal
I would disagree.

reply

Close was perfect, because she is a flawless actress. Her looks or percieved lack of sex appeal didn't matter. She was very willing a he wanted a one night stand. He didn't plan to keep on seeing her. He wanted to sleep with another woman and leave it at that.

reply

For a start she does a pretty fine job in the role

Secondly, her character is incredibly attractive at the beginning in a sexually aggressive and self assured way.
