A Star Trek: The Next Generation wunderkind is subject to this week's Unpopular Opinion!

reply

You're so right!

That it's an unpopular opinion.

reply

Used to hate his stupid clothes with that rainbow shoulder thing going on. Loved trek just could not relate to that privileged brat with a hot mom.

reply

Hahaha, Wesley was LGBT before the crazy movement that has infiltrated our major cities and towns of late.

In all seriousness, I believe the rainbow colors was to signify Wesley's capability in Science, Engineering, and Command sections of the Enterprise. He could literally have gone into any of those fields.

reply

You're not the only one - Wil Wheaton HATED those clothes.

reply

I think one could argue that the idea of the Wesley Crusher character could be interesting, but how it was written and portrayed didn't uphold that potential. Imagine having a young genius character that *doesn't* fall into the usual tropes. Alas. :-)

reply

He would have been far more interesting if he'd been obnoxious immature as well as a genius, and had to be removed from the bridge for acting like the 14-year-old boy he was under stress, and going on from there. Imagine if the horrible kid who the captain resents actually did save the ship - wouldn't that be more interesting than some of the stuff they put on the show? But no, he was played as a wish-fulfillment character for younger viewers (and the parents, he was so damn perfect), which really cut into his believability and likability.

But that was a failing of the show in general, most of the characters were too professional and well-behaved to be totally believable, or all that interesting. Picard being the exception, of course.

reply

I agree. For the most part he did little more than push buttons.

The writer of that article has pointed out the common method of including a specific character for a specific audience to relate to, to make the property more successful. It is common practice, even in movies of all kinds.

reply

Wesley is the Jerry Gergich of TNG.

reply

Wesley was a great character till they derailed him into fairy tale land. I was really looking forward to seeing him rise up through the ranks and become a total bad ass. He should be headlining TNG movies right now. Lord knows Wheaton has enough of a cult following to support them.

reply

They should of done a Scrappy Doo and made him return as an evil character in the movies!

reply

I always liked Wesley. A mature, intelligent, thoughtful, polite teenager was a refreshing change from the spoiled teen delinquents and malcontents that are the cliche in most cinema and television. And Wil Wheaton did a great job portraying him. I was sorry to see him leave.
