Most BORING Arnold film EVER!

Aside Hercules In New York and Batman & Robin, this one was painful to watch. Not because of the bad acting. But I think it's because of the bad writing and bad casting. It does not feel like an Arnold movie at all, and every single mob boss look like they're wicked ancient. Too many characters involved with each other and it has nothing to do with the plot. Majority of the movie is talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk of things that I can care less about. There were little spurts of action but they were less of a minute long. The only part of the movie that was great was the gun fight at the end. However, the rest was a BORE!

What's not to love? Bad writing, acting, filming, and the Governator looking so out of place that the movie really looked like a spoof. I think they were trying to make him sort of a James Bond under cover type.... Only he came across like a SNL character trying for laughs. These big time mob guys wouldn't smell set up from the start? Ya right.

I recorded it, but was so under whelmed that I dumped after around an hour. I know I missed the primary action, but I just don't go for total crap movies regardless of the action...Never did. Just glad I never paid to see this dog

exactly, i just watched this bore fest about a year ago and it's so incredibly boring that it's painful to watch. it's really hard to watch the whole movie. other than a few quick parts and scenes i can't think of any good parts. even the action scenes are boring and generic. they don't stand out at all. none of them. these are not arnold quality action scenes.

I agree GetWokeGoBroke. The scene of Arnold driving a convertible with one hand and shooting the gun at the bad guys with the other hand is awesome. As is him going into the building and shooting everyone up. I am one of the few though who enjoys the non action parts.

I enjoyed Robert Davi/Arnold's interactions in the non action parts and the acting wasn't too bad between the mobsters. Not sure why people found it boring?

Well the final shoot out is kind of fun, I just wish I didn't have to sit through 90 minutes of bullshit to get there.

The problem here was the director, John Irvin.

He is a very good director, but he came out of that period in the 50s and 60s of British directors like Karel Reisz, John Schleschinger, Lindsay Anderson etc. They started in theatre and then went on to TV, making primarily British 'kitchen sink' dramas.

Inevitably at some point most of them tried their hand in Hollywood. Some had more success than others.

Basically Irvin was a director for hire on this movie. He needed the work. But he was not an action movie director by any means, and certainly not the man to helm an Arnie vehicle.

I believe the failure of the movie is down to Irvin trying to keep everything grounded and realistic, but that does not work for these types of movies. I am pretty sure he battled with the studios over his vision of the movie. Hence what you end up with is a bit of a mess.

Another good example of this is Tango And Cash, with Russian director Andrei Konchalovaky...but that's another story.

Yes exactly, the movie didn’t know what it wanted to be, if you want to be a serious gangster film fine, if you want to be a dumb action film fine, just pick one and stick with it

It's not really that bad of a movie. If it was the exact same movie but with a regular actor like James Woods then it would have been fine, but people expected something more larger-than-life with Arnie after Commando.

What I don't get is he convinces his wife that he's dead, puts her through all kinds of hell and grief and then apparently she just takes him back as if nothing happened, WTF??? Then after Harry gets shot he's just like "It's alright, I mean I'm probably paralyzed for life and may die but hey it's all good". Then at the very end we have what is supposed to be some kind of dramatic moment with Harry that is totally out of tone with the rest of the movie.

It was to protect her in case he got exposed. Sometimes editing can give the impression of things happening off camera, so there was probably an off-camera scene where he told her the truth, she freaked out and then slowly came to terms with it.

Harry lost his son, so he was kind of blase about life. Having said that, I often wonder if there were some reshoots. The hospital scene does seem like it came from a different film altogether. Also, the gravel pit scene seems like an add-on for test audiences who complained about lack of action.

I get that but there is no way she would have just taken him back after he put her through hell, also why would they believe he was dead? There was no body in the car.

There had to have been reshoots and deleted scenes that probably sucked but without them unfortunately the plot doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The gravel pit was also stupid, why would he play I Can't Get No Satisfaction? First of all the song doesn't go along with what he's doing and secondly in the context of the movie there is no reason for him to do it.

I don't mind that song playing during that scene. Also you must hate a particular fight scene in the 2004 Punisher movie.

I never saw 2004 Punisher and that also wasn't my point, why would Mark put on music before he invades the Rock Quarry? Doesn't that kind of alert everyone to his presence?

It was a cover-up, so they didn't need to prove to the "widow" that he was dead. I guess the excuse would have been: "The damage is too distressing."

The authorities would need to see a body or else they would never have declared Mark dead, also when Amy went to the funeral wouldn't there have to be a body?

Another dumb moment: After Mark beats the shit out of Lemanski's men in the department store and he and that chick leave there is a busted window and glass all over the place not to mention a guy passed out right in the middle of where everyone is walking and no one reacts to it, they just keep going about their business.

This movie is basically The Departed, only not good.

Unless the authorities were all in on it in an in-joke kind of way. Remember the tagline: the system gave him a raw deal.

It could have been a closed casket funeral for a case they want closed. 🙂

Harry might have planned for a dead man's switch, info-wise, in case he died.

That department store scene bothered me until I realized that it reflects how some people don't want to stick around to be questioned by the police.

They weren’t only Harry was, the film made that quite clear, if anyone else was in on it then Max would get his cover blown (which ended up happening regardless)

Someone is going to notice there’s no body, again only Harry and Mark were in on it

No one is going to just casually walk about their business after a massive brawl broke out and there is a body passed out in the middle of the walkway not to mention broken glass all over the place

Is this the movie with the bus action sequence? I remember that being pretty dope. No, that was Red Heat. I always mixed these two up. This is the one where he drives a jeep? This movie is terrible.
