As much as I love Prince, I have to agree that the film is painful piece of cinema to watch. It reminded me of a porn movie with the dirty bits cut out and obviously with much better music.
I totally disagree, I've seen this movie literally more than 100 times. Now "Under the Cherry Moon" and "Grafitti Bridge" were so bad that I found myself laughing and just shaking my head at some of the most melodramtic scenes. However, I still love both soundtracks.
lol, me too, this movie reminded me a lot of the postapocalyptic porn romp café flesh, the music is top notch though, and you gotta love how it perfectly captures the 80's zeitgeist.
What's with this "Worst film EVER"/"Best Film EVER" Rubbish? Are you people who post things like that all 13-year-old girls?
I've seen this movie, well let's just say several times so I don't sound like a total geek. Does it contain "The Best Acting EVER"? Absolutely not. Most of the people in this film had never acted before. They were mostly people involved in the Minneapolis music scene. In my opinion, there was a very rich crop of musical talent in Minneapolis at the time. Their talent was not acting. However, I feel the music, locations, and cinematography more than make up for that weakness. Yes, movies have bigger budgets now, the “High Fashion” may look quite dated and we’ve all seen better acting, but this movie still ages gracefully. That’s quite a feat for “The Worst Movie Ever”.
Purple Rain was part of what we use to call “back in the old days” Artist Development. Prince grew a lot as a performer (and in ego) after this film. His live sets became considerably more technical. If you have not seen him live, treat yourself. Even if you are a casual fan, Prince’s live performances are to this day truly amazing.
Say what you want about this film. Purple Rain is Celluloid Cool. Say what you want about this man. If we live to see young talent even close to this again, consider us all blessed.

I totally agree with you about his stage performances. I saw him in concert back in December, 1984 and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. If not the best concert.
Totally agree. I see "Worst Movie Ever" in the message boards here about 7 out of 10 of the movies I visit. Either it's the same person(s) doing it, who obviously dislike all films, or a troll.
Out of over 5,000 ratings, I think I've rated 5 or less 1/10. There has to be A LOT wrong with a movie to get a 1/10 from me.
I'll second this. "Purple Rain" is an amazing tribute to the power of music in film - especially 80s music and what Prince means to it - but almost every performance felt forced and inauthentic, with the "Answer me!" moment being unintentional comedic brilliance.

Saying this is the "Worst movie EVER" makes you sound ignorant. No such thing as a worst or best movie. And plus, reading "Worst movie EVER" gets old after seeing it on ever movie on IMDB.

Mods should simply delete ANY "Worst movie EVER" thread made. People who make these threads are idiots, plain and simple. Sorry but it's 100% true. There's not much worse a thing you can say to sound any more ignorant.
