The Homophobia is shocking

Huge Eddie fan here but Good God, I was shocked by the homophobia at the start of this set. It really was unbelievable but I suppose in 1983 the world was still uneducated and bigoted.

reply

No, people were just more honest back then.

reply

How is it honesty? Just because he says what he's thinking? Its homophobia and homophobia is the result of poor education and bigotry in society.

reply

Exactly. People should be honest about their own stuff in their on lives. If you are not a homosexual why talk about it. Comedy is funny when it is real.

reply

Kind of funny since years later he gets busted picking up transsexual prostitutes.

reply

i wouldn't call it homophobia, just distasteful and politcally incorrect. He doesn't have anything against gays

reply

I'm of the opinion he says what a lot of other people are afraid to say. On reflection, it's one of the funniest parts of the show

yeah, i mean you can play tennis with a gay guy...

reply

I was definitely a little taken aback. Does this offend a lot of gay people? If I showed it to my nephew who is gay, would he think it was funny? Does that seem appropriate?

reply

Hmmmmm as a gay man I was sickened by his reference to the spread of HIV from kissing. Again, ignorant but still offensive.

reply

I'm offended by your judgmental, holier-than-thou attitude. In 1983, AIDs was a new, scary disease and most people weren't sure how it was transmitted. But I'm sure you could have informed everyone, if you could have bothered to come down from your tower.

reply

A new scary disease that was predominantly being reported to be affecting that gay community. His comments about gay men and his apparent fear of them, thus his remarks about aids were ground level remarks. I was standing on the street looking up at the ignorant people in the tower that you accuse me of being in. Fear doesn't have to lead to vicious prejudice, or maybe in your world it does..oh and gays were as scared as straights back then. Ignorant comments made by up and coming comedians only further alienated those gay, straight and indifferent sufferers at the time. So, again, high tower or human?

reply

It also could be self-hatred. But I don't judge. Especially the part where he is walking around with his butt clinched.

reply

Yeah there's nothing like judging the world back in 83' with 2011 eyes

reply

[deleted]

Even with 1983 eyes, it was a pretty crappy thing to do.

reply

rgcustomer-
How old were your eyes in 1983?

reply

exactly.

I've always found it amazing that people believe gay men are so thin-skinned that they can't take a joke.

True homophobia lies in Victoria Jackson thumping a bible on CNN, Ted Haggard advising George W. Bush on "family values" the day after a rendezvous with a male prostitute, or in-the-closet senators fighting for legislation "protecting the sanctity of marriage" (read "discriminating against homosexuals").

Outrage against a comedian poking fun at gay men in a concert is misguided outrage.

And no, I'm not gay. But every gay man I've known over the years has had a good sense of humor, and wasn't overly troubled about jokes, any more than I'm overly troubled when black comedians make jokes about "whitey."

We need you to calm down. No one is outraged. It is a bit shocking. Every hear of a shock jock. No one is outraged, but it is a bit shocking none the less.

reply

'Political Correctness' did not force Eddie Murphy to become a neutered entertainer and make films like Daddy Day Care... If Eddie softened his image, it was his own decision, when he realised he could make a crapload of money doing family films instead of pushing the boundaries.

He's even said that the thing stopping him returning to standup so far is that he'd have to do his research by going to clubs again, and that seems too much like work.

As for Clay; you can still do edgy standup, you just won't get as much exposure and therefore less cashmoney... In other words, they sold out for security's sake, which I guess is understandable if you've got bills to pay or a family to think about. The other thing is that maybe they matured as they got older.

Eddie's got to pay for all them kids, somehow!

Who cares if gays are offended??...They ARE comedy gold you know.

"We make fun of homosexuals...Well,because they're homosexuals".

reply

Like my mom said there is no way someone would say this today. I think thats somthing I like about he would make jokes others were afaid too but today everyone has got to be so sensitive about everyones feelings instead of just taking it and moving on or laughing at it. I mean I don't think alot of the jokes family guy makes about religon is great but you know what I either laugh at it or shake my head and go "what am I going to do." Same with the 9/11 jokes that the show has made I just move on with my life.

reply

You care, that's why you commented. You must be, well you know comedy Gold as well. Because we all know gay idiots like yourself should be made fun.

Go play in traffic douchebag, haha.

reply

I know it was filmed and produced in 1983, but still the level of homophobia that was displayed by Eddie Murphy was disgusting. There is simply no excuse for that level of homophobia.
