Good God, what a horrible mother.

Smokes weed in the house, with kids home, and doesn't make much of an effort hiding it with her kid coming in the room, not to mention the place would absolutely reek with weed smell. She has an impressionable teenage daughter in the house and as a mother she still smokes at home. She shows utter lack of concern for her kids in terms of safety. The house starts getting haunted and she thinks to use her kid on the speedy floor thing - a risk no normal parent would take. You notice something like that will happen, you don't wait, you send the kids to grandma ASAP. That's all the examples I can think of for now, but what a cursed creature this mother is. I don't care how liberal you are with recreational marijuana whether it's in a place where it's legal or illegal, this is plain disastrous parenting.
And I haven't even gotten to talking about pervert undertones in the movie making that once analyzed quite heavily implies that people making the movie had an unnatural attraction to children and teenagers. And don't give me "some teen chicks are totally hot" argument, because it's just not right with a hairy stinking overclass 50-year-old feeling a little grope happy around teenagers and children.

No kidding? Didn't know Tom Cruise likes kiddie action. Doesn't surprise me in the least though.

It was freakin 1982 for God's sakes.

They thought the kids were asleep and I bet Dana never left her bedroom. Granted, they should have shut the bedroom door haha.

Besides Robbie was way too young to comprehend what they were doing when he walked in anyway.

What's wrong with a hard working couple relaxing in their bedroom enjoying eachother's silly behavior? It's not like it was Meth or anything.

And again....it was the year1982 which was still tailgating on the 70s just before Regan took over.

Oh come on..Diane should be on the top ten best mothers ever list! Okay the weed was a bit irresponsible but it wasn't a huge deal. She didn't know the house was haunted when she was letting her daughter slide across the floor. At the time she thought it was some gravitational abnormality. And look what she did for her child!! She went into another dimension to get her back, then when she ran back into the house to get them out at the end!

Agree, she seemed really devoted to her children and mostly really nice to them. A lot better than my real life mother.

What pervert undertones?

Lara Croft Himiko! The First Sun Queen! This is Yamatai.

reply

The invisible non-existent ones that only a pervert could spot.

Probably the middle-aged pool contractor making lewd comments towards her teenage daughter, and mouthing "I love you... I love you...". The daughter flipped him off, and the mother just laughed about it, never saying a thing to the guy.

People weren't terminally and permanently outraged and butt hurt back in 1982.

I fully agree with the majority of your post, VVolfySnackrib. Using recreational drugs is always very irresponsible and inexcusable, but worse if you are a parent. Diane is a disgrace, and not just because she gets high. She invites, as you say, danger to Carol Anne and is amused when her daughter is sexually harassed by a man who is working for her family. Diane also thinks nothing of flushing a dead animal down the toilet, which is disgusting and extremely insensitive. She should have the decency to bury her child's pet. Steven is not much better though, since he has no objection to his wife's behavior or regard for private affairs. While I understand your suspicion, this movie does not subliminally feature pedophilia or ephebophilia. The emphasis on Carol Anne's personality and later her body are for the sake of identifying her as a pure little girl. That helps the audience understand the motive for the kidnapping and increases the overall fright. The incident between Dana and the construction worker is thrown in to show the sleaziness of the girl, who is a stupid crybaby.

I agree with you except the weed part. Get over it--there is zero scientific evidence to support the notion that weed is anything more than a harmless plant. The stigma is cultural nonsense that puritanical simpletons got brainwashed into believing.

But yeah, the moment the mother let an invisible entity grab her kid, I was officially done. I have zero reason to feel sorry for characters this stupid.

Eh? Are you referring to the moment with Dana and the construction workers? Because I don't think they were 50 year-olds but even if they were, some teen chicks are actually hot. She wasn't, but some are, and you don't magically stop finding them attractive as you age - this is perfectly normal biologically.
