Why did we let E.T. become the highest grossing movie of all time?

To borrow from this Reddit discussion that I linked below, it's not a sweeping epic, based on pre-existing material, nor a massive world-building franchise starter. Plus, it wasn't even the only sci-fi movie to be released in 1982. We also had Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Blade Runner, The Thing, and Tron. And even the spaceship in ET is a downgrade from the spectacle that Steven Spielberg had previously shown us in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
