John Carpenter's The Thing vs Invasion of Body Snatchers 78?

Which film did you prefer, they're both classics, remakes (or sequels of classics) awesome and filled with suspense and both known for their classic endings and famous scenes & moments. So, which did you prefer and why? John Carpenter's The Thing or 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers?

If you're somebody who prefers both new versions over the originals then I think it's hard to argue that The Thing was a larger improvement over its original than Invasion was over its original. You may like Invasion '78 more than The Thing '82 as a movie, but I still think you would be hard pressed to say that The Thing wasn't a larger improvement.

The Thing I think works better overall because Invasion of the Body Snatchers latter stages are reduced a little too much to a generally uninteresting series of chase sequences.

I never much cared for The THing.

I thought it was silly and derivative of Alien.

Limit of the Willing Suspension of Disbelief: directly proportional to its awesomeness.

The Thing reminded me of Alien too. I don't know what it was. I loved Sutherland's performance in Invasion 78, maybe my favorite performance from him.

He was so good, and I think very underrated.

He was excellent, I agree. I mean, that last scene with him & Elizabeth when he's begging her to stay with him. Amazing performance.

How is JC's version of The Thing similar to Alien? Except on a basic level, it's really not. I like the 1978 version of IOTBS, but The Thing is a much, much better movie overall. Also, the acting by Nimoy and Goldblum was heavy-handed in this film.

Oh ... hello, Buster. Here’s a candy bar. No, I’m withholding it. Look at me, “getting off.”

They're pretty subtle for the most part, the isolation even though one takes place on Earth and the other's in outer space, the isolation is clear. Also, some of the quotes are similar, i took this to mean either Carpenter or the writer were fans of Alien:

Kane: Quit griping.

Doc: Quit the griping, MacReady.

Originally, Ripley & Parker make it to the ship as the lone survivors, they're kinda at odd through the film. In The Thing, same happens with Mac & Childs.

i rated both as 10 which i guess means that i rate both equally. the truth is that i infact do rate both as classics. both are brilliant and timeless and will outlive us all.

Agreed! Both are and both will.

The Thing by a country mega mile!

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" gets my vote of course. I love The Thing very much but it's a bit overrated. I found only 2-3 really creepy moments. Alien was much scarier.

Each had disturbing scenes that stuck with me but I'll truly never forget watching Invasion for the first time and seeing Sutherland's duplicate get his head split open! I was 9 or 10 the first time I saw it.

The Thing is technically superior and much more exciting to watch.

Invasion is far more effective thematically. It's about subtle degrees of spiritual survival in the mundane world that any variety of daily experiences can trigger association with. It's probably the best movie about the neocon takeover of America, among other things.
