John Carpenter's The Thing vs Invasion of Body Snatchers 78?

Which film did you prefer, they're both classics, remakes (or sequels of classics) awesome and filled with suspense and both known for their classic endings and famous scenes & moments. So, which did you prefer and why? John Carpenter's The Thing or 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers?

Both are on my short-list of greatest horror movies of all time, but "The Thing" is #1 on that list for me. Not sure where Body Snatchers falls, but it's almost certainly in the top 5.

I've had a chance to revisit both of these recently and they are both terrific films. It's hard to choose, for me it's apples and oranges. They do have a lot of similarities but they are also both pretty distinct in many ways. I like to think of these as two sides of one awesome coin.
In The Thing you have the claustrophobia of being trapped inside. In IOTBS there is an equally claustrophobic feeling even though they are in the same wide open world they had been used to. In The Thing there are a handful of people and eventually they all know what is going on. They then have to determine who among them is not what they seem. IOTBS has a handful of people who are the last remaining, in the world possibly who are simply trying to keep themselves from being cloned.
Anyway, the point being that they seem to be different perspectives on the same theme and they both make compelling statements.

Agreed, classic movies the both of them. I loved the heightened paranoia where you're unsure of everyone. Just look at how Matthew looks at Nancy when they see each other on the staircase. Love that scene!

The Thing seems to get even better over the years. BS seems somewhat forgotten.

reply

^^Yeah, that's true, but it's still an awesome movie. Some say it's even better than the original film.

Well I do really like Invasion..., but the Thing is much better IMO. It's an outright classic.

Agreed, but I LOVED Invasion 78, definitely a horror classic in it's own right.

1) The Thing (original)
2) The Thing (remake)
3) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original)
4) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (remake)

Haven't seen The Thing from Another World, which inspired The Thing, but I want to.

I just think being stranded in a frozen wasteland is scarier than LA (or major cities). But maybe that's just me.

I haven't seen The Thing From Another World but I've heard many great things about it.

I saw The Thing in the drive in when I was 12 with my folks. It scared the living mess out of me and it still strikes a nerve when I watch it. I had never watched Invasion fully till a few weeks ago.. can you believe that? It used to come on TV when I was a kid and I could not sit thru it since it scared me so much. I think now watching and comparing the two, I still prefer The Thing anyday. Although Invasion is a good movie. Matter of face, Im watching Invasion again right now.

Not even a comparison. The Thing by a Mile.

Both nearly scared the sh!t outta me as a kid.

If I absolutely had to choose, it would be "The Thing." Donald Moffat just rocks as Garry. But they're equals in my mind, though I watch 'The Thing' more than IOTBS.

I love to love my Lisa.

reply

Yeah, Moffat is awesome as Garry! I think he was as cool as Mac & Childs were to be honest.

I love how both films have pretty dark endings. Don't see much of that in film these days.

The Thing. IotBS is pretty darn claustrophobic considering the big city, but it can't compare to Antarctica. While the "science" behind both concepts of imitation is pretty much non-existent, IotBS has kind of strange rules that don't make a lot of intuitive sense and aren't as interesting as The Thing (the Thing itself and how it assimilates has been an on-going topic for years with no end in sight),

And I know its one of the major drawing points for a lot of people, but I don't really like how there's never really hope for anyone. The Thing was a downer too, but we saw people fighting to save the human race. IotBS becomes more of a chase movie, and frankly it doesn't make much sense to me that giant pods laying around and new kinds of flowers all over the place didn't make the news before it was widespread. The whole "fall asleep and you become one" thing, the apparent telepathic communication, the viral aspect- it stacks the deck to the point that the inevitable downbeat ending is kind of "ho hum" for me.

With all that said (and I could add more), I like the film quite a bit. Its well-made. But the Thing is much better imo.

Very good question. I love both, but The Thing is always one of the top movies at the top of my list whenever I'm thinking of my fav horror movies.

ftr : Yhey're both regarded as great remakes, but I have a feeling Invasion would have higher regard than it does in general if its original wasn't regarded as the better of the two originals. I think it makes it tougher to make people think of the remake as such an improvement.
