Yikes, this is horrific.
I can't believe this ever succeeded, it is so ridiculous.
shareI disagree.
shareI watched a video somebody made where they took away the iconic music and it seemed like every other cheesy scifi movie of the era. Star Wars only succeeded cause of the score.
sharegood theory.
shareMost of the "cheesy scifi movies of the era" were actually cheap ripoffs of Star Wars. And they were very, very cheesy.
shareI wouldn't say ONLY, but it greatly helped. The score was, and is, superb. My main gripe with Rogue One was the score was like a Star Wars knock off.
shareVisuals were the main selling point. Score helped in a sense that everyone was surprised they had opted for orchestral music, instead of wailing analog synth that seem to have been the standard of 70s Sci Fi. However, had Lucas not applied the revolutionary visuals he is now famous for, Star Wars would have never become Star Wars.
shareone of the greatest films ever made
shareIt was always a B-movie for kids... the ridiculous part is how people held on to it being "important" as they grew up...
share It was important cause it was ground breaking in special effects and entertainment value. Movies before star wars were pretty lame. Star wars brought back the week end movie craze. Look at the movies of the early 80s and compare them to the ones that came just before 1977. Star wars really raised the bar.

The seventies decade was getting jaded and tired. People needed a jolt of joyful entertainment like Star Wars. It came along at just the right time.
shareNo it wasn’t. It didn’t become a “kids” film until ROTJ.
Kids films didn’t employ acclaimed British actors, amazing composers, political themes. Being aimed at adults is why ANH holds up.

I'm going to agree and disagree at the same time. For a number of reasons. Firstly, at the time of its release, they didn't make movies wondering what was coming next, let alone what was coming 40 years down the road. They didn't even make them knowing there IS anything coming next (at least back in the 70s). They also didn't make movies wondering what hairstyles, costuming, special effects and production values were going to be like 40 years down the road. This was made in the 70s and it LOOKS like it was made in the 70s.
Secondly, I don't know how old you are, but I am 50 years old. What that means is that when this movie was released, I was a 10 year old boy. There is no easier target for them to hit with something like this. Today, if I were to see this exact movie for the first time at 50, it would be total crap and I would piss myself laughing all the way home. But at 10, I was mesmerized, as was every kid like me. Lucas and those that created all this didn't even know what they had on their hands until kids like me (and there were a lot of us) latched onto this thing for 10 times its worth.
Incidentally, the hairstyles have come back around.
Well said, art.
😎
Yep, very well said. It was magical...kid candy and then some.
shareI disagree Larry, (i'm 46 btw)
I dont think anyone at any point has made a movie thinking "what will these clothes \ hairstyles look like in 40 years?" (you imply that they do that now)
Star Wars dosent look as 70s as it should - the collars on the costumes were the opposite of flared, as were the trousers.
The hair wasnt totally 70s either.
True that us kids at the time overvalued it , but I think if it came out now Id be pretty Entertained, as I was by rogue one.
And the CGI comic book garbage made today will look exactly like it was made today in 50 years.
Movies can only be judged against the context of the time they came out. Star Wars will be a classic in 100 years. And no one will remember anything from tee last decade of crap.
Were you bothered by the fact that their was a story at a fantasy movie or by the fact that it had heroes which succeeded at the end (and wasnt therfor some ultradark and teens only whinefest) ;) ? There were times when heroes were something to look up. And stories purpose was to have fun.
A long time ago ;) .
It was a different era, but I loved it. It was like nothing I had ever seen before.

INFIDEL!!! 😲😲😲😲😲😲
