Were people really this stupid back in 1977

Tell you what, I've seen some characters portrayed as possessing low intelligence, but nothing compares to some of the ones in this move. Starting with the lead on down. That coffee shop scene between Tony and Stephanie was brutal. The idiotic pretentiousness of their conversation. I know that it was "a different time" and all, but damn. Just damn.... And Annette.... And Tony's entire family. And Tony. And Tony's male friends. I think that the only character that had any real smarts was Tony's boss.

And yet...judging by the comments people make on the Internet, those 1977 idiots were way smarter than anyone today!

They were the same types like the lot in The Jersey Shore series or any Bravo reality show.

Certainly the most idiotic thing said in this whole film is Annette’s pathetically weak retort to Tony…

TONY (to Annette): “You’s not exactly my dream girl or nothin’”

ANNETTE (eyeroll, borderline upset): “Oh yeah? Well if you lookin’ for a dream girl, go sleep and have a nightmare.” (Mic drop moment…)

Whoa, Annette. 🔥🔥🔥 That is some Oscar Wilde level wit there.

Believe it or not, people were no more stupid in the 1970s than they are now. In fact, young people in those days could read cursive writing, tell time on analogue clocks, count cash, drive cars with manual transmissions, and show up for work on time five days a week!

Do you watch YouTube or late night shows interviewing Americans? I'm from the Philippines, but many interviewed don't know their history that even I know, a foreigner. They can't read nor write in cursive, can't tell time, don't know if Canada is a city, state, or country, etc. I think you'd find people as stupid or worse today than back then, I mean they have teachers today teaching 10yr olds how to give bj to adults. Same teachers who don't know what men and women are. I hope this doesn't infect my country.

I remember having classmates who were too stupid to even point out countries on a globe in my junior high and high school classrooms, and me being annoyed and frustrated that the teacher didn't call on me instead. And yeah, I've met people who can't read in cursive at all. I had to translate the letter "Q" for a few classmates I had in college a few years ago. Gen Z is really scaring me at how stupid and lazy they are with their minds, no thanks to their electronic addiction.

I hate to break it to you, but a common rule of thumb at any time in history (present included) is that the majority of people in the world are idiots. Granted, some are worse than others, and that's also true for movies. Sometimes a character is written to be dumber than the average moron to make them stand out, though it only really works for comedies. I find them extremely annoying in action flicks, thrillers, and horror flicks. Idiots in dramas are kind of a mixed bag.
