Were people really this stupid back in 1977

Tell you what, I've seen some characters portrayed as possessing low intelligence, but nothing compares to some of the ones in this move. Starting with the lead on down. That coffee shop scene between Tony and Stephanie was brutal. The idiotic pretentiousness of their conversation. I know that it was "a different time" and all, but damn. Just damn.... And Annette.... And Tony's entire family. And Tony. And Tony's male friends. I think that the only character that had any real smarts was Tony's boss.

People have always been stupid

Frank Jr. was smart.

I felt sorry for Stephanie, who was trying like heck to fit in and aspire to something and she was so, so deeply insecure.

To me, that was the stuff that made the movie interesting; the insecurity and fear these characters carried around with them. Tony was this veneer of cool masking all this immaturity and anxiety; he was trying to grow, but kept keeping himself down.

Yeah, they're unappealing people, but they felt realistic to me and showed some of the real panic of youthfulness.

Tony was smart and Frank Jr. was smart. I agree though pretty much everyone else is either an idiot or a jerk. That was the point of the movie.

You ever been to New York?

reply

To be honest, the chick's pose in the movie poster has always made me laugh

reply

You are never going to find smart people in New York City. People with brains get the fuck out of that shit hole and it has been that way for decades. If the city had no access to Connecticut most of the investment banks would have to shut down from a lack of workers. My worst times when I to go on the road at work were those when I had to go to NY.

Compared to what, the savages nowadays who set themselves on fire or throw buckets of ice water on top of their head simply for "likes" on a video? If anything, society are de-evolving into smug apes who think they're better than everything & everyone, including older generations, which is ridiculously! As far as the the film, it takes place in an Italian-American section of Brooklyn in the 70s where machismo & small-mindedness prevail. That's the characters in a movie!

reply

Stupid people have stories to tell as well. Modern television and movies prove that on a weekly basis.

reply

No, its just society advancing. I'm sure 45 years from today, the people of 2022 will seem pretty stupid.

In 2022, people from 2022 seem pretty stupid.
