Shooting Stars
Anyone notice the shooting stars in this film?
Many Spielberg movies have them. Anyone know if these were genuine, or added in?
I believe it happens in two scenes on the Orca.

Yes, they were genuine in Jaws. Which is why Spielberg then used fx to put them in some other of his movies, as a nod to Jaws.
shareGood trivia.
shareThat's interesting, because even when I was a kid, the shooting star in Jaws looked fake to me, as if it was animated in.
shareOne of the ways you can tell it’s real in Jaws is from of how it skips, because the shooting star was too fast for the film cameras frame rate. Making it look animated in a way.
shareYes, the skipping was exactly why I thought it was animated.
shareI think a lot of people assume it’s fake because of that fact, but if you really think about it, that’s proof that it is real. Because it would have to be poorly done animation to skip like that. If it was an FX shot it would be smooth, like the one in Temple of Doom.
shareTIL!
Edit: Or possibly not...

From IMDb
According to The Making of 'Jaws' (1995) documentary, the shooting star that appears during the night scene at 1:36:05 as Brody loaded his revolver was real, not an optical effect. However years later it has been shown that it indeed was added in post. The scene where they are visible was shot during the day with a filter over the lens to make it look like night and therefore would not have shown a shooting star. In addition to this, a shooting star has been one of Spielberg's calling cards in numerous movies.

This sounds like a job for Captain Disillusion!
