About the comedic comedic whistle sound effect on the car stunt

Everybody - including me- is still complaining about that stupid idea to add a sound effect to that beautiful stunt.

I don't know a single person who enjoyed that mistake.

So...after 40 years, wouldn't it be possible to just take that off the new DVD editions and forget about that mess ????

I mean, it's not like it was a line of dialogue or about the appearance of a character....
It's just a sound effect that can be removed easily.

Considering the effort put into producing the stunt the sound effect completely undermines it

I was thinking this exact thing.

While film purists balk at edits to classic films, and I am generally in that camp, I don't think anyone can defend that effect.

It's jarring every time I see it, but I guess it was 1974.

According to John Barry who put the whistle in, he said that he "regrets ever putting it in the car jump scene"!

Great stunt! Lame whistle. But I wouldn't wanna mess with it after all these years. Where would it end? Cough Star Wars cough

that even sounds weird on the soundtrack without the imagery, i'm so happy john barry returned to make the soundtrack to this, up to live and let die barry had been making soundtrack to each movie, i don't know why they started various music makers after that, i've enjoyed the others as well, the soundtrack to the spy who loved me is amazing and quite diverse, the only one i wasn't crazy about was for your eyes only, though soundtracks to other movies that guy (bill conti) has made i'm quite hooked on, like rocky for example, but for your eyes only sounded too much all over the place without a common theme and didn't feel very bond like, from russia with love and diamonds are forever are probably my favorite main tunes, on the commentary track to this movie moore says he was surprised how some of the words to this particular tune slipped by, i'm so used to it i didn't think about it, but listen to what she (lulu) sings for goodness sake, tom jones must have been really young when he recorded thunderball, on her majesty's secret service is my favorite overall bond soundtrack album, i love listening to all albums up to the late 1980's when everything about bond began to transform (soundtracks, actors, producers, age limit...) i'm not making this up because i'm partial to john barry's music and the past movies, but i've read dreadful reviews of the soundtracks made after 1987, i admit i was hooked on the 1989 movie when i was a kid, but as an adult i think it's just a disgrace and ruined a fun franchise, i partly like the soundtrack though, you're kind of grateful cubby broccoli convinced moore to return as bond once more in 1985, personally that's where i stop in the series, barry returned once more though.

It was such a great stunt....ruined by the slide whistle.

How could audio ruin something visual? The stunt is still the same.

Can't you just

1) Get a sense of humor
2) Develop an ability to appreciate visuals and audio separately
3) Push a mute button
4) Ignore it
5) Realize there are bigger problems in the world to care THAT much about what effect plays in some movie
6) Understand there are lots of movies with just as silly/stupid/unrealistic/groan-inducing sound effects, and no one seems to mind?

1) Humour is a big part of Bond films, but usually a good sense of humour. The slide whistle was bizarre and out-of-place.
2) Movies have had a welding of audio and visual since silent films had orchestras (or at least a pianist) providing music to perk up the atmosphere. Whole categories of awards are given out to people who blend visuals with sound because the merging of those sense is one of the fundamental building blocks of this medium of artistic expression. If you want to separate the two and appreciate them on their own, you're looking for paintings or music.
3) Manually editing movies every time you watch them? I suppose people could.
4) Sure. But if there was a "director's cut" of the film with the slide whistle removed, I think a lot of people would want that.
5) You're on a movie message board. We're here to talk flicks. Nobody here, to my knowledge, is under the impression that these problems are bigger than starvation, disease, poverty, or war. I think everybody here has a sense of perspective on that. I also think most people would agree that one poorly-chosen sound effect in one of the lesser Bond films is not as big a problem as, say, large chunks of the Star Wars prequels, but this thread is about this particular moment in cinema, small though it may be, insignificant though movies in-general might be next to, say, cancer. But if you're asking for people to maintain perspective, please look around and see where you are: movieland.
6) Depending on the film, people either wouldn't mind because they suit the material (nobody minds wacky SFX in Monty Python - it suits the no-holds-barred humour) or else I think they do complain. Multiple boards have been devoted to the foolishness of the sabre-toss and the "your mom" jokes in Star Wars VIII. When stuff is tonally inconsistent or jarringly out of place so as to interrupt the film viewing experience, yes, indeed, they do complain, and where better but on a film message board site?
