...is because it is a completely unrealistic, ridiculous scene. Rape victims do not start to enjoy the rape halfway through. That's why you're confused, because it's bulls#*t. And all the stuff she did that supposedly instigated the rape (whether you argue that she wanted to be taken by force or that she 'deserved' it) is also bulls#*t. That whole scene(s) was thought up by a man, written by a man, directed by a man and so on, and so of course she deserved it and wanted it, because everybody knows all men have magical d*cks, and if we women would just roll over and take it, we'd all be much better off and not be such up-tight b*tches.
No, not all men think that way, and yes, this is just a movie, but there are plenty of stupid, ignorant people out there who see something on TV or in a movie and take it as gospel. And this scene perpetuates this myth that 'no' means 'yes, but I just don't want to admit it, so I'm saying no.' Which is bulls#*t.
Agreed. I saw it for the first time today and I couldn't believe it. I was confused, did she know him from before? When it was over, I looked at my husband and said this is horrible, it makes it look like a woman would enjoy being raped. Just wow.
Your confusion might come from your age The movie was made in 1973, I don't know if you were even born yet. At that time, scenes like this were not at all unusual. I remember seeing James Bond films where Connery look women by force. Today, any aggression toward women or children is taboo, and if a male character even verbally insults a woman or child, he is severely punished later in the film . He is usually beaten to a pulp, or killed. Let me ask you, when a man is kicked in the testicles in a film, do you laugh? When he is beaten because he laughed at a female character, do you think he deserved it? Do you turn to your husband and say "thats horrible, it makes it look like men should be physically assaulted for making a joke". Most movies today imply only women and children deserve respect, and men don't matter. Our laws reflect this, as men are much more often actual victims of violence than women, we are much more likely to be beaten or killed, and there are no legal special protections for us. Watch any group of movies made before about the early 80s, and men were depicted more positively. Today, men ARE shown as dumb, evil, and not worthy of respect. "Women and kids can do whatever they want, men don't matter" is the new Hollywood mantra.

Times change. This was made in 1973 and "pretend rape that the woman enjoys" was VERY common both in movies and in TV. I think it was a leftover of the '50's meme that all "good" girls have to say "NO!" to protect their good girl status, but really want sex. It was worst in the '30's and '40's movies where there was lots of men SPANKING "uppity" women, like bosses spanking their secretary, or the detective spanking the mouthy female witness.
The women of course were always shown to adore the men afterwards.
Personally I find the dozens of popular movies from the '30's and '40's with "cute happy n**gers" (the n-word is always used in these movies" totally unwatchable, yet it was just fine with audiences of the time, and was a common comedy trope.
I think you are missing the point. It was not a "rape" because she intentionally ran into him and as he said "wanted to get to know him." Yes, technically, in today's times it would clearly be rape, no question... perhaps it would have even been rape back then, but the way it is presented is-- they both knew it wasn't rape. She wanted him but she wanted to manipulate him and play games like she always did with men and it didn't work out like she'd planned.
The first time or two I watched this movie, I was also put off by this scene, it seemed gratuitous and unnecessary to me, but as I have watched more and dug deeper into the meanings and what was trying to be conveyed, I get it. The Drifter wasn't a sentimental guy, he didn't give a rip about her or anyone in that town.
The last part of the scene where she is submissive and turned on, demonstrates that this was not a (classical) rape. Yes, unacceptable behavior by today's standards, no doubt... inexcusable behavior! This movie didn't take place in 2015.
2 yusef, there actually have been some films in history, and it was even featured in one Western film as well, that dealt with such "gender-reversal" subject, but this was clearly NOT one of them, indeed, the perpetrator here was a man, and his victim was a woman.
He was avenging everyone in the town who just stood there and stared while Jim Duncan was whipped to death. That's why he acted like a jerk to most people.
Marshall Duncan while being bullwhipped asked the people to help him, but none did. Before dying he damned all of them to Hell. That is why he had the whole town painted red. He was out to avenge his own death at the hands of all those cowards. Mrs Belding was the only one who ran out to save him, but was held back by her Husband. Marshal knew that and was happy to see her leave. Similar Movie is " Pale Rider" .

I will never watch this movie again because of that part. It just turned me off. I'm sorry I spent my money on it. It went in garbage which is where it belongs. It's a mean hateful film too.
When you find yourself with the majority It's time to stop and go with the minority.
you're a retard.. he had obviously come back from the dead in order to avenge his own death, due to the townsfolk standing idle by while he was being whipped to death.
hence painting the buildings blood red, adding "hell" to the sign and treating them all badly.
Maybe I have a bad sense of humor but I actually laughed at this scene when it was over, especially since the woman goes to him again for more later. Then when the other woman hears about it, she tries to stab Eastwood in the eye, but Eastwood blocks the attack and forces a kiss on her, then she gives in and likes it all along it turns out.
I think a lot of it was really a dark comedy and people missed the point, unless I am just too twisted?
She obviously wanted him, she was bent out of shape because he could see right through her little game. Yeah, it was a bit of dark comedy and it wasn't really a rape scene. What a way to open a movie, 3 *beep* dead and he takes a woman in the barn and the flick is just starting!
