Airport is an aviation disaster film
They have made aviation disaster films since then
ergo they have remade Airport

With aviation getting a big blow because of COVID-19 worldwide, I really doubt film makers in Hollywood or elsewhere will risk pissing off the airliners and damaging them further with a disaster films.

I would imagine in order to modernise it the writers would have to throw in more interesting problems and challenges. It'd be an entirely different movie.

But my question is, who can replace the wonderful George Kennedy?

No point in remaking it. They should do something completely original.
