The Brady Bunch Spin-Offs: Why They Failed

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Kcc11uRKFk

The Brady Bunch is a staple of American sitcoms -- and the producers tried to expand the Bradyverse with spin-offs, cartoons, albums, a variety show, multiple reunion movies and more. Find out why these projects didn't take off and see the ones that made it to air.

Because they sucked is why.

reply

Yep. Never even bothered watching them I could tell from the promos.

reply

Exactly. The worst was "The Bradys" where they tried to make it a drama. Greg was now a baby Dr and Bobby a race car driver? Where did all that come from? At least it was cancelled before it could multiply.

reply

At least in the original show, one time Bobby dreamed he was a race car driver. So maybe he was always into that idea.
But Greg a doctor? They should have had him either in a band, or somehow else in the music business, as a band manager, etc..
And Jan married to Philip and uptight? When did she change? She should have been a free-lance artist, maybe a single mother.

I don't remember Bobby dreaming he was a race car driver. I remember he dreamt he was an NFL star, was visited by a flying saucer and victim of a train robbery. But even if that is the case, he never showed any interest in cars. It's not easy to get into racing...it's usually a rich man's hobby unless one is born into a racing family. And I think Bobby was keeping it a secret at first (?)
Yes I agree about Greg. Usually, DRs are the type of kids who collect butterflies and play with lab sets. Greg never had any ambition (typical teen).
The problem is they were giving them 'dream' jobs. If I was in charge, I would have Greg start a business with a friend and they would have their ups and downs. Bobby would be a pool cleaner. Jan might make a good dental hygienist. Maybe Peter tries to follow in his dad's footsteps but still wants to be a magician....

I think when he was upset that he had no trophy (because they didn't just give them to everyone then) he dreamed of winning a trophy as a race car diver.

After The Mary Tyler Moore show finished they spun off the character Lou Grant into his own drama series and it was on the air for a few seasons I think.

reply

They went with an obvious parody approach rather than a more toned down tribute which would have been a bigger parody.

But that’s Hollyweird, why be subtle when you can beat people over the head.

The 1995/1996 movies were great because they were over the top camp. I thought they were a hoot.

reply

Agree the movies were good and fun. They also focused on the actual family dynamic of the early 1970s Brady family of Mike, Carol, Alice, and the kids.

The biggest problem with the spinoffs was that the kids now had spouses and kids of their own. Everything we knew about the Bradys had changed and it added a bunch of people who we didn't know and quite frankly really didn't have any interest in.

I'm sitting here thinking back - and one doesn't have a really good answer. I was too little when "The Brady Bunch" originally aired. However, like many little boys and girls of that time, when it went into syndication - yeah, I was watching it. Then I remember a variety show. The big thing with that was no Jan. I can remember everyone hated that the original Jan (Eve Plumb) was not in the variety show. Then, for me anyway, I outgrew the Brady Bunch - probably like everyone else of my age group. I think there was The Brady Girls get married or something like that in the early 80s. Then I believe in the late 80s there was a Christmas special. After that, I think a regular one hour TV show. One doesn't recall watching any of those programs. However, I did take interest in the first Brady Bunch movie which I thought was hysterical. The second one was all right, too. Anyway, the only other thing I'm aware of is a recent program all the Brady kids did RE: fixing up the old Brady house from the TV show. I think I watched it once out of curiosity. But back to why all the spin-offs failed, well, I'll blame it on my own experience, I outgrew the show and no longer had interest.

I haven’t played that link yet but I remember there was an episode of the original series that was intended to be a spin-off. The episode was about a married couple that were friends of the Bradys adopting three kids from different ethnic backgrounds. I guess they couldn’t get it produced at the time but around 1986 they made it into a series with Dee Wallace Stone from E.T. playing the mom. But it wasn’t successful.

Ooh.. remember that. Ken Berry was the father.

reply

Brooke Bundy played the mom.
