was Scotty just as smart as...

Spock??

reply

Probably not. However, Scottie was a brilliant engineer; that is he was brilliant in the practical application of science. In pure research or theorizing, Spock was better. But applying that; actually using it in a machine; Scottie was better.

reply

Well, Scotty is of course brilliant. But consider that in TMP he needed Spock's help to get the new warp engines working properly.

86'd ???

reply

"Eighty-six, eighty-sixed, 86, 86ed, or 86'd is American English slang for canceling something, killing someone, getting rid of something (by burying it), ejecting someone, or refusing service. "

reply

And that expression is why the creators of Get Smart (1965-1972) gave their bumbling secret agent protagonist Maxwell Smart the code number of 86.

reply

No, but he was more highly trained in warp theory and propulsion. Spock's discipline was in science.

Mmmm, I got the vibe he was damn smart...not really in the same way as Spock though, the way Spock almost has a computer mind and memory and could do mathematical computations down to the hundredth decimal point all in his head.
I got the vibe Spock had wisdom and knowledge of great, great breadth and depth across many different subjects...he'd call up on Earth literature, history and mythology often and for them that would be 300 year old history.

Scotty was brilliant within engineering, I didn't get the sense he was so brilliant in so many different fields of study and his mind didn't quite have the same calculator ability Spock did.

reply

I think there are different types of smarts, some people are great at 2d logic and theory while some are great at 3d logic and engineering. I am for example very good at reading and making theories but am shit at doing anything practical or repair stuff. My logics puzzle iq is high but my spatial iq is below average, that is what I was told when I did tests. Shortly, Spock is better at logic and theory and Scotty at repairing engines.

reply

No.

Scotty was a bloody terrific engineer, and was devoted to his job, but there were several instances where Mr. Spock showed that he knew almost as much about the engines as Scotty. And Spock was no more than mildly interested in engines and engineering, his primary field was physics and his secondary interest was every other kind of science, engineering was about his 100th field of study, and he could STILL tell Scotty how to fix the ship in a crisis.

reply

No but he was a genius engineer. He reminded me of a guy I knew who was not book smart, not that good in math but had a first rate engineering mind.
