Ever since I was a kid, I always wondered, who likes this show ...

Ever since I was a kid, I always wondered, who likes this show ... and why?
It was on TV all the time when I was a kid, then re-runs over and over, and in
all that time I've never watch a full show, or maybe as much as 5 minutes of
it.

I think it is an insult to the victims of WWII, and even worse than McHale's
Navy which was awful as well.

What was with these shows? Why did they make them and who likes them?

I rarely watched a full episode either but it was on tv all of the time when I was in grade school so I still got a sense of it.

It blew me away and made me feel all the more sure that I wanted to be a writer.

Even when it was in its first run and I was a kid, I couldn't stand it. It seemed like a corny ripoff of "The Great Escape", not to mention trivializing the experiences of WWII Allied POWs and making a prison camp seem more like summer camp. Also, I always found Bob Crane smirky and irritating.

reply

They weren't trivializing. They were mocking. It is a common comedic technique. Much like Blazing Saddles mocks racism, Hogan's Heroes mocked the Nazis.
