Which version is your Favourite?

Do you prefer this or The Omega Man?

How good do you think I am Legend will compare?

Now that we have three movies based on the novel ('I Am Legend', 'The Omega Man', and 'The Last Man On Earth'), I have to go with 'The Last Man On Earth' as being head and shoulder above the rest. It is the closest to the novel, although I still can't figure out why they named Price's charater Morgan, while in both other versions the name of the main character remains Robert Neville, as it is in the novel.Price keeps the character much closer to the one in the novel, and the story line here is much more realistic, especially in these days of AIDS, Ebola, Mad Cow decease, Aviary Flu, etc. I know that Heston better fits the physical attributes of the novel's character (it's always interesting, in any Chuck Heston movie, to see how long it takes before he takes off his shirt. This one got a whole 10 minutes into the movie before the pecs were barred!), but Price was much better at pulling off the psychological evolusion of the character, and that, in my opinion, is what counts. As for the current 'I Am Legend', the less said, the better.

I just finished watching 'The last man on earth', watched 'The Omega Man' a few months ago and 'I Am Legend' on the day of its release in the UK.

Personally I thought that 'I Am Legend' was the best out of all the films. I have not read the novel so i am merely comparing the films. From what many have said on these boards, all three films stray away from the novel in one way or another therefor I say that I Am Legend was the best, even though it doesn't have much to do with the Matheson novel.

I loved all three Roberts and felt that each one used completely different acting styles. As hard as i try i cannot choose between them in terms of who i thought was the better actor. I would recommend watching all three versions, in any order (it doesn't really matter) and just make up your mind as to which you thought was the better...

I am going to sum each film up in one line to save time:

Last Man On Earth - Classic Vincent Price acting, quite convincing zompires and quick shots of deserted streets/buildings...

The Omega Man - Quite comical, you find yourself laughing at many of the goofs (people driving cars/walking in the backgrounds of shots and seriously badly dressed zompires) but good acting and good direction...

I Am Legend - Brilliantly acted with emotional, humorous, fighting scenes and simply magnificent scenes of deserted cities...

The Last Man On Eath is still my favorite version of the three. I don't care if it is the closest adaptation to the book, the movie itself shines all by itself. This film was ahead of its time by two or three decades.

I Am Legend is my second favorite version. Will Smith really outdid himself and brought so much depth to the character. There were times when the movie did drag a little and became slightly boring, but overall there isn't a whole lot to complain about. Personally, I thought the CG was very well done.

The Omega Man I didn't really care and is by far my least favorite of all three. I mean it's ok I guess, however it does nothing for me. I've seen it maybe three times and each time I saw it I simply stared at the tv mindlessly. I tried to love it but it simply didn't happen.

After mediocre reviews, I was surprised - without appearing to damn it with faint praise - to find "I Am Legend" a respectable remake. I like the fact that they took a different take on the story. It is only in his own mind that Neville is the last man because he won't leave Ground Zero because of a messiah complex. There's a sadness to the film because the original scientist and Neville only wanted to save people.

I suspect the problem for the studio will be in shifting DVD units. The dog scene was hard enough to sit through once. The demise of the mutt in the Price movie is almost comical.

Overall, despite uneven pacing and direction, the Price movie is the best because of the outrageous ending when the Italian Fascists turn up. Maybe the director inserting his own political commentry? I just love all the black widows standing around with their babies.

But basically all the movies work because the story itself is idiot proof. You can't really muck it up because it's such a cool concept.

"the CG was very well done"?

Have You ever seen well done CGs? And I am not even talking about The Golden Compass, I'm talking about movies that didn't needed computer effects, like 28 days later or Dawn of the dead (2004). And, as for computer effects- I'm not even talking about 2008' Rambo (which has the best I've ever seen), I'm talking about Terminator 2: The judgement day. This movie is almost 20 years old. If You consider CGs in I am legend well done, then I envy You. I could enjoy a lot more movies with effects done really bad.

Sorry for my english.

Well, having read the original novel, I have to pick Last Man on Earth as my favorite of the 4, with the novel being my second choice, Will Smith's version being my third choice, and the Chuck Heston flick coming in with an honored last place finish.

The novel is very similar to Last Man, but with a profound twist: In the movie, Morgan cures Ruth before he is killed by the former vampire vigilantes, but in the novel there is no cure. So Neville's death comprises an inevitable and necessary passing away of the old race of humanity. In the film, Morgan's cure is deliberately rejected by the new society through ignorance and brutality, and Ruth becomes the last woman on earth, with the potential for her blood still providing a cure and the rebirth of a rival human society over against the former vampires, who must rely on a daily vaccine to keep themselves alive. Very interesting fodder, worthy of a sequel (which was never made to my knowledge). The identifying of Morgan as a Christ figure at the end is also well-done.

Omega Man, beyond its rather cheap '70s TV feel, bad makeup, silly special effects, and gratuitous female nudity, does retain some enduring points. Tony Zerb is a fine villain, as always. The over-all sympathetic view of the Heston character, as the final bastion of human art, literature, science, and over-all culture, and the Christ-identification at the end (which it shares with Last Man) are very moving to me. The vampires in this film are all basically luddite fundamentalists who want to usher in a new dark age of oppression as their reaction to the evils that brought forth the plague. Heston's character stand's up for the enduring worth of human history and culture against them. This is the film's best feature, even if it's a bit over simplified and stereotyped.

The will Smith version falls far short on both story and meaning for the sake of suspense, action, and special effects; most of which are well done and worthy of the film's focus. I liked the more up-beat ending, too; which gives a positive spin on the title. Matheson's Legend was a negative one, with the legend of Robert Neville taking the place of the boogey man within the new vampire society. Will Smith's Legend of sacrifice and cure becomes the starting point of rebirth for humanity. The Christ figure is never overtly revealed, as with Last Man and Omega Man, but it's there between the lines just the same.

I haven't seem Omega Man yet, but honestly, I prefer Legend over Last Man. Last Man is a bit dated. The creatures, (while they're at least not crappy CG), weren't very threatening at all. I wasn't very concerned for the well-being of Vincent's character regarding their attacks. I do appreciate that Last Man on Earth made the whole situation into much more of a human drama, (much like Romero does in his "Dead" films), but Will Smith created a very relatable character in Legend. I worried about his safety and I did NOT want that dog to die. I was hit very hard to see him lose his only companion of three years.

And don't give me any of that pretentious junk about how I must just be a young idiot who eats up modern films and doesn't care about originality. I actually LOVE Vincent Price's "House of Wax", much more than the recent third version. I just related to Will's character more and appreciated the suspense and emotion of I Am Legend. Really, my main complaint with Legend is the crappy animation on the vampires, but I heard they tried using real actors first, but couldn't get what they wanted. I give them props for at least trying to avoid CG.

Here's the comment I like, by deacon blues about Omega Man: "its rather cheap '70s TV feel, bad makeup, silly special effects". The words I was looking for. Omega Man just didn't have atmosphere or the right feel or appearance. Maybe too much color too. (You won't find me complaining about gratuitous nudity). Too 70s pop-art.
Last Man On Earth is really a GOOD movie overall.

"Last Man on Earth"--definitely. Price does an incredible job, and the story is better. Of course, I prefer the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," too, in comparison to any of the remakes.

I would say that although Vincent Price is the better actor as opposed to Smith or Heston, I AM LEGEND > LAST MAN ON EARTH > OMEGA MAN. I thought that the epic visuals were good, and took things to a level that I hadn't seen in any other "last man alive" type movie. Last Man though does have better human drama, but that factor was suprisingly good in Legend, and was close behind. Omega man was kind of Hokey, and was a decent flick but it can't hold up to the other 2.

Quite liked each version and was especially pleased with the lead actors in each pic.

I've seen all three, and neither remake stands up to Price's original. Heston's is laughable, and, while Smith's is visually impressive and he himself does quite well, the film lacks the atmosphere of the original. In addition, Price as a legendary boogeyman to the vampires is more effective, in my opinion, than the twist given to this point in the new version.

Last man on earth

I started out by watching I am legend, and liked a lot. 'but when I heard about the original story i just thought it was such a pity that they replaced such a good story with the one they used. havent seen omega man though

I Do not recall Omega Man, but But Saturdays in the late 70 & 80 was all Sci Fi theater and Chiller with Bill Cardill. So I most likely saw it.

I really like Last Man on earth better that I am Legend, The ending was much more palatable. BUT... The creatures in Legend showed much more intelligence. More that Will's character gave them. It was obvious that the critters were still evolving, I mean they couldn't be all mutant creatures whose only reason for being was eating the normals. Take dudes Betty, Will did and got chased and then hoisted on his own petard for it. That revenge scene was best in the movie.

Again I don't recall Omega.. But if you want Heston Horror... You can't beat Soylent Green. Still my favorite Heston Movie.

Well, next in the collection is Original Night of the Living Dead.
