Last Man: Certainly wins for the sheer performance of Price and the atmosphere. None of the others have come close and it alos inspired Romero, so you know it was that good.
Omega Mam: Fun and Kitschy in that 70's way, with a Manson style 'family' to boot. That said Chuck was typically hammy, which was great then and now.
I am Legend: Looked and sounded great but the CGI monsters were horrid and not needed. The worst crime of course was making Neville the hero which totally distorted the novels premise. He was not a Legend like King Arthur but a Bogeyman like Dracula to the new World Order. The alternate finale shows the film makers knew what they were doing when they went 'soft'.
For me Last man still wins.
Clearly, "The Last Man on Earth". Thematically, neither "The Omega Man" or the released version of "I am Legend" addresses Richard Matheson's original question, "When depravity becomes the norm, does rejecting it become abnormal?" EVERYONE except Robert Morgan, was a vampire, even those who had not yet become "undead". Morgan was not; however, he was endangering the existing norms. HE, not those living with the disease, would be remembered as a "monster," as well as a "savior," for providing the antibodies to defeat the virus. This was also the original ending of "I am Legend," until studio idiots turned the storyline on its head. However, that movie has so many ridiculous inconsistencies, I find it barely watchable. The thematic element of "The Omega Man" is racial intolerance, a big issue with Heston, who one of the few celebrities to closely embrace the civil rights movement. Unfortunately, Heston, director Boris Sagal (Katie's father) and the producers made a hash of it, with "undercranked camera" at the beginning and a thoroughly resistible female lead in Rosalind Cash. If being true to the original material is important, "The Last Man on Earth" wins hands-down.
shareOmega Man, hands down. I like B movies also and Vincent Price is a good actor. The Last Man on Earth is a good movie and Vincent was fine in it - I just think he was miscast.
I have seen all three movies, and while TLMOE was closer to the novel, I think The Omega Man was the best movie and Heston was sensational.
Didn't like I Am Legend
1. The Last Man On Earth. I agree with those who compare it to Night Of The Living Dead and Carnival Of Souls. The images of Vincent Price collecting bodies, throwing them in a big pit and setting them on fire is truly gruesome and terrifying.
2. The Omega Man. A bit cheesy but it does generate a real sense of dread. And it has the best musical score of the three.
3. I Am Legend. I wanted to like it, but those lame CGI creatures ruined it for me. They weren't menacing at all.
