Which version is your Favourite?

Do you prefer this or The Omega Man?

How good do you think I am Legend will compare?

The Omega Man!

(Although I love this one too!)

I know they are very similar, but is "Omega" an actual remake? Are they both from the same book?

Omega Man sucks. this movie has Vincent Price, how can Chuck Heston compete?

"Omega Man sucks. this movie has Vincent Price, how can Chuck Heston compete?"

Hmmmmmmmmmm...................let's see...............Charlton Heston: Acadamy award winning actor. The star of many a great movie, including his role as Moses in "The Ten Commandments", Ben Hur in of course "Ben Hur", and numerous other substantial parts in top notch movies.

And then...............yeah............Vincent Price: Forever to be known as the king of the b-movie horror genre. Yes he is a good actor and has done some serious roles and done them well but when you look at the two careers side by side perhaps the question should be, "How can Vinny compete with Chuck"!

Wooooooooo go Vince! (I'm sorry for being an idiot but I love B movies)

Are you pregnant?
No! Unless you put something in my egg-roll. And then put the egg-roll in my...

reply

Yay! B-Movies Rock! And so does Price!

reply

So because Charlton Heston made bigger movies, he's a better actor? I'm sorry, but I am in disagreement. Granted, Heston is a good actor, I feel that Price is much better. I am a big B-Movie fan, and I feel like the fact that an actor does mostly b-movies does not make them a bad actor, or any less than a "normal" actor. I mean, Bruce Campbell? There are plenty of fantastic b-movies, and I don't think you can discount an actor just for being in those. That being said, i think Price does his job extremely well, and is creepy as *beep* when he needs to be, and dark and gloomy when appropriate.

reply

I'm inclined to agree. I love Heston (especially in the miniseries Chiefs), but in general I find Price infinitely more watchable if I had to choose.

I mean, really, how many times will you look under Jabba's manboobs?

reply

Well...Vincent Price did star in The Ten Commandments as well. Vincent price is way more than the King of B-Movies...a very distinguished career and gentleman...he was more regarded as the Gentleman of the horror genres.

reply

Vincent Price was in The Ten Commandments too.

reply

I wouldn't say remakes, I think the proper term now is retellings or reimaginings

All 3 are based on the novel I am Legend by Richard Matheson

Last Man on Earth was the better movie to me. The hero was way more tragic in it. The whole movie was way more serious and darker than Omega Man. Price was amazing. Richard Matheson thought he was miscast. I didn't really picture Price when I was reading the book myself. But Vincent Price really gave a great performance and now I will always see him as Neville. I'll never forget the scene when he's watching old home movies of his family at the circus. He starts to laugh hysterically and then it turns into crying.

reply

I am in agreement with you.

I've read the novel and viewed all three movies, and I must agree with you. Not to say Omega Man is bad, it is one of my all time favourites, but The Last Man on Earth seems lonelier and even more pessimistic. I think Price and Heston are two of the greatest screen actors ever, but to me its hard to compare them even in similar movies because they are just too different. They both accomplish their roles well. The movie I am Legand with Will Smith is bottom of the barrel rubbish put out by Hollywood to capitalise on Smith's popularity. He is totally miscast and he looks lost in each scene. The only reason I even watched it through was because I wanted to see how Smith would meet his destruction and mercifully end the thing.

reply

This one's still my favorite version. Interesting how this version from 1964(!) is way darker than the adaptation that came out this year.

Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeosity made flesh.

reply

Since "I am Legend" cost over $200 million to make, the producers weren't going to take any chances with a "dark" picture. It's an OK thriller, but with Will Smith and a dog, it's got plenty of warm and fuzzy to balance things out.

You can see the Italian influence in "The Last Man on Earth". The visual style is truly horrific --- the Will Smith picture of course relies on CGI and has virtually no atmosphere at all, just monsters straight out of 28 Days Later.

"The Omega Man" is a cheesier picture, full of 70s corn, but it's better paced. "Last Man on Earth" is stylistically superior, but it's a bit stiff in spots.

"Last Man on Earth" works better as a horror picture. "The Omega Man" is more of a thriller. (I also like Anthony Zerbe's character, Matthias, and the not-so-subtle dig at organized religion.)

Thats true, I was surprised at how dark this was. I have to say that out of the 3 films this would be my favorite, followed by I Am Legend and then Omega Man. I would have been crazy for this film but I didnt care for the third act very much.

Visually and budget wise, I Am Legend is the superior of the three. But , in my opinion, if you go by which is most like the book, then "Last Man On Earth" is the most successful. It's ending is almost exactly the book. If I had to choose though, I like "I Am Legend" the most of the three. It stands well as it's own movie. Hard to actually compare it to Last Man On Earth since it's so different in almost every aspect outside of the basic plot. I'd say "I Am Legend " is more like a remake of "Omega Man".

Seems like this thread forgot to list "I Am Omega". It is also an adaptation from the same book. Has anyone seen it? It has only about 3 out of 10 stars in it's IMDB rating.

According to a comment (and a general consensus of all the comments on this movie):

this movie is in no way based on the novel, it's simply using a name similar to the book/major blockbuster movie to make money. if you read the book ther is absolutly no similarity atall in anything contained in "I am Omega" wheather it be, story/ploe, chatacters, situations, time lines, terminology. it's a farce to try and piggy back on the sucess and reputation of other media sources.

The movie is a joke anyway and not in a self depricating "We're low budget and so bad we're good type way" it just takes itself way to seriously and is full of plot holes pointless scenes, terrible acting."

Why are they doing a sequel to Donnie Darko???

reply

Last Man on Earth definitely.

Saw I am Legend last week, and Omega Man yesterday. Neither really did a thing for me.

reply

It has to be Last Man On Earth, hands down. This is a film that bucked the trend when it was made by being as dark and emotionally challenging as it was, and if reports on the Will Smith version are founded, it remains the most serious, downbeat and intelligent of all adaptations to date.
What must not be underestimated is how very much it pre-empted Night Of the Living Dead. If ever there was a criminally overlooked classic this is it. The Omega Man doesn't hold up at all.

Hunter S Thompson R.I.P, we'll never see your like again

=====Little Spoilers=======

Last Man On Earth, no question... Empathy for the character, followed the book with an interesting female role, flashbacks that told the back story were VERY well paced and inserted... Vincent played his character like an "everyman", you know, you and me, buffeted by life, doing the best he can, a loving and pragmatic man baffled by events still pitching the game of life the best he can.

Then, I Am Omega, A REALLY 'NO Money' recent version with an interesting "tragic" actor, watched it on the web, so it might be rarely known maybe? I liked how the creatures were almost given a personality, were always meddling around, just like one would believe an animalistic creature would do.

Then, The Omega Man, Heston is good to WAY OVER THE TOP, very erratic, in this, and if you ask me, it seemed MORE DATED than LMOE. Plus, I am used to the Hestonator coming out on top, not whining while dying... a tragic actor would of been better cast... definitely a "heroic" actor put in a tragic drama is a contributive to no points gained factor. If I see Charles, Arnold, the other Charles (Bronson) or Clint coming, I KNOW THE DAY IS SAVED (or it better be)!

Finally, I Am Legion. I can see WHY Will may of wanted to do it, as it takes an actor with serious riffs and chops to pull it off- like Tom Hanks in the movie about being stranded on that island. You got to be able to strut your craft to carry a movie that is 75%-90% JUST YOU. He could of pulled it off, but two MAJOR problems stomped his performance into the MUD. First the script. I and NO ONE I KNOW liked the script at all ON ANY LEVEL! I'm still confused, Did he TRAP HIMSELF? Who set that TRAP? At another point, he went all whiney and WRECKED THE TRUCK? Sure, we all get emotional, and he used it well when his dog got lost for a little segment, but COME ON! We are supposed to believe he SURVIVED all this time- I would think his family loss was the worse? Then, the little lady LIFTED HIS UN-CONSCIENOUS body from the UPSIDEDOWN wreck? WHILE THE CREATURES WERE RIGHT THERE IN MASS numbers? Before you say "maybe the kid helped", think a moment. Hint: Risk factor. Ever care for or bear/have a child?

Second, Will himself. I know this actor can carry almost any movie. And he did. I watched the whole thing, and enjoyed it, didn't I? But Will was Will, NOT EVERYMAN. He is closer to a heroic or comedic actor with a heart of gold than me or you (unless you are an alpha male- only 1 out of 10 is). At least he did succeed in a fashion by saving the race! Just because it comes in 4th, remember, that doesn't mean it is horrible, just less, opinion of course, than 3 other efforts based on the same material.

Why not have an end of the world movie staring a GIRL!!! C'mon! Why not?

Obviously you haven't seen NIGHT OF THE COMET. And katyzone, that's some of the worst writing on movies that I've read in a while. You raise some of the most uninteresting questions about plot holes in I AM LEGEND. Com on, this wasn't a difficult plot to understand - although the movie was too short. Who do you think set the trap? How about the CGI alpha-wanna be 28 days later- Zombie who releases the hounds of hell on our Fresh Prince of the Apocalypse...remember Willie set the trap that captured the female specimen - which turned out to be alpha-dead's beeaaitch.

reply

I've seen all three studio films and "Last Man on Earth" succeeds where the others fail . . . and with a considerably smaller budget.

"Omega Man" and the recent "I Am Legend" films are action/thrillers while "Last Man on Earth" is more horror/drama.

That being said, all these films are flawed efforts at adapting a truly classic novella. My fear is that the book has inspired so many varied genre films that a true adaptation would be a moot cause. Had the recent film effort been created/released 10+ years ago (as per the original plans) we'd be having a different discussion entirely.

This was definitely most faithful to the book. However, I prefer the omega man overall.

I am Legend was awful.

reply

I agree with the previous poster. This version is much more true to Matheson's novel than either of the two subsequent film adaptations, but I think that they are all pretty good...each in their own way.

"The Omega Man" is my favorite, partly because I was a kid when I first saw it more than 20 years ago...and it scared the crap out of me.

welll ive seen all three and i just saw i am legend last night so i might be a bit buzzed from it still but... i have to say i am legend was my favourite sorry, i just liked how they showed his daily life after the end and of course samantha the dog (that dog made that movie, and she broke my heart) the second half after anna comes along suffered since it stopped being a mood piece and turned back to an action movie with a clumsy written in religous subtext. after that last man on earth was my favourite, vincent price was great and the whole idea of your undead friends knocking on your door everynight commanding to come in was spooky, it also had the best ending especially the bit where its all turned around on vincent and its shown that he is a monster

i didnt like omega man at all... it was just so arrogant and gun toting, sure it had the first interracial on screen couple (i think) but it didnt do anything for me

i am omega is a mockbuster made by ripoff merchants the asylum, they make cheesy movies that vaguely resemble blockbusters, title them simular to said blockbusters and hope people watch em by mistake (they also did a film called "transmorphers")

oh as for the "it preempted night of the living dead" well thats because george romero ripped off i am legend a tad, in the triva section of my version of my copy of last man on earth it says how he admitted this to richard matheson and said how he made no money and richard just said "serves you right, thief!"

I prefer the book so far XD. I still need to watch The Omega Man Version of the story. Otherwise, the book, followed by I Am Legend, than LMOE.

reply

I am Legend was to be quite frank, boring. Furthermore, it had Crappy CGI and ridiculous plot holes.

The only memorable scene from the whole movie was the bit when he was in the dark, in search of his dog.

I can't believe they had the nerve to call the film 'I am Legend' and change the actual meaning of it, in terms of the book.
