I really need to know... did Mark rape Marnie?

I wouldn't be offended if he did and it wouldn't really hurt my appreciation for this film, it would just confuse me a little. Mark leans over Marnie on top of the bed and she's looking sort of afraid... then fade in, fade out, and onto the next scene?

If Mark really raped Marnie, then why did she want to stay with him at the end of the film?

Marnie didn't as much as say no, let alone offering any physical resistance, so there's no way it could be considered a rape, legally or otherwise.

When a female has intercourse for the first time it is usually, if not always, extremely painful. Her face was too frozen but the pain would have been too great for her to not have at least winced.

Wrong. "Extremely painful" is a ridiculous exaggeration. Getting a shot from a dentist is longer lasting and far more painful than having your hymen broken for the first time.

Back then it probably wouldn't have been considered rape as men could probably legally rape their wives then (it was only made illegal in the UK in the 90's) . She obviously didn't want it, had already said so was catatonic and in no way consenting or enjoying it. You don't have to be saying no at the point of penetration - that's why nowadays the man has to be sure he has active consent. That is why you can't go around sticking your penis in very drunk, passed out, sleeping comatose people.

The problem we have today is that people still have a problem understanding this and many don't even know what rape or consent or lack of it is.

Marnie was raped, in my opinion. She appeared catatonic, not submitting to his advances. I never got consentual sex from her point of view. Hitch made a point of showing us when she submitted to his affections, and how she felt afterwards.

According to modern definitions, yes. A man can barely touch a woman anymore without it being perverted into sexual harassment or rape.

Can I also ask this then - OK, so the laws at the time etc were heavily flawed and whatnot, and it is an on-going problem that still has people not fully made aware of it etc.

Based on this, do you think Marnie should have killed Sean Connery's character out of vengeance, like in the "I Spit on Your Grave" movies?
