Why isn't this film more highly regarded?

I love this film...smart, slick, funny and an intriguing storyline. I would rate it up there with North by Northwest (also a personal favourite), but this one is not nearly as widely known.

I'm astonished by the rating it currently holds in this site: for once people seem to care about an excellent lost gem. I'd expected the rating to be somewhere between 6 or 7 -- most of these forgotten classics unfairly hold these ratings -- but to my surprise, this one has an astounding 8.0. Kudos to the fans! Anyway, I ask myself the same question... I'm used to seeing such great films neglected. I mean, I honestly feel this is one Audrey Hepburn's and Cary Grant's best, it's not necessarily on the same level as North by Northwest, but it's that great on its own right. Some seem to agree, other's don't, but it'd be nice if it could get a bit more acknowledgement than it barely has. At least it left somewhat of an impression on the critics back then.

Oh, my god. I'm in line to see Meryl Streep strip? NO BLOODY WAY!

I suspect that it is because it straddled genres and defies strict categorization. Is it a crime/mystery? A romance? Comedy? Well, yes. I think that people who appreciate mixes like that appreciate it most while people who are purists for one genre or another probably don't. Mystery lovers might reject it because of the lighthearted elements. Rom/Com fans might find the plot to complicated.

And there simply aren't enough stamp collectors out there.

well, i've seen Charade and i admit there are something mighty interesting in the mystery story if i consider it only a 'mystery' film, and the action were interesting too, but i really think that the dialogue and the acting were a bit below the average, and if i consider that it is also a 'comedy' film, well the comedy wasn't clever and brilliant at all, so i think it is so far from masterpiece North by Northwest if you compare them but yes, there are something interesting in this movie

Isn´t the IMDb rating of 8,0 more than enough for this piece of massively derivative, overcooked fluff, as amusing and entertaining as it may be?

I'd say it's a semi-classic. Lots of casual movie fans think Hitchcock directed it.

It does have that feel to it.

I'd always thought it was pretty well regarded any way.

May be it isn't thought of as a classic because it does seem, as many have noted, strongly influenced by Hitchcock's work.

The credits for instance seem like a cross between Vertigo and North by North-west.

But if you are going to copy something, you may as well copy the best.
