Why isn't this film more highly regarded?

I love this film...smart, slick, funny and an intriguing storyline. I would rate it up there with North by Northwest (also a personal favourite), but this one is not nearly as widely known.

It's a good movie. I liked it since when I was kid and saw it on TV. But maybe that is the problem. It had a sort of childish juvenile quality to it. I don't mean to be derisive, like I said, I love this movie, but it's not really a ground-breaking or great movie, but it is very fun ... at least the first time you see it. It was a general PG type of movie, like "Father Goose" another Cary Grant movie that is one of my favorites.

I wouldn't call it juvenile, but it definitely is frothy compared to something like NORTH BY NORTHWEST. There's no real subtext to the narrative and there's a cuteness to the treatment of the material that some might not take to. However, this frothiness is what makes the movie appealing for most, me included.

Even though I can see many flaws in it... Charade is my favorite film of all time.

It reminds me of movies like The Thomas Crown Affair (both versions), James Bond movies, Mission: Impossible movies... rich man and woman, thriller, fancy-exotic locations, chemistry, romance, danger involving the leads... I love those elements.

Me too. This movie is pure escapism. I don't really care that it doesn't have any Hitchcockian/Freudian meta-narratives or that it is essentially froth. It's a fun movie.
