The missing Barney Fife

I realize that Don Knotts left the show to pursue other interest, but it's weird that they didn't mention anything about his character leaving to go pursue other things. He just disappeared. Kind of sad.

They did mention where Barney went. He took a job on the police force in Mt. Pilot(state capital?). He pretended he had a very important job with the big police station but in reality only made people coffee and did other unimportant tasks.

That's what I recall, and if I remember right, Barney came back for a visit at some point. I think there was another story line that had Barney trying to catch some "bad guys." Something to do with a grocery store in Mount Pilot??

Yes, Barney appeared in at least four episodes. In one episode he returned to Mayberry for a class reunion only to find out that Thelma Lou had gotten married.

He was a detective in Raleigh. Don't know how he got that job because he seemed to be as inept as he was in Mayberry! In one episode Andy visits him and figures out that a local crime spree is being done by a family who is renting a room to Barney. Barney is totally clueless, but Andy steers him in the right direction to solve the crime.

That's funny; I can just visualize it.

I recently caught the very beginning of The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. It was like he was Barney Fife all over again only flashing a press id instead of a deputy's badge.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is funny! I have a DVD called 'The Don Knotts 4 pack'. It includes that film, The Shakiest Gun in the West, The Reluctant Astronaut and The Love God. Don Knotts had the "nervous, funny and scared" character down pat.

Seems like The Incredible Mr. Limpet should have been in that anthology.
