Taking the elements of race, gender and age out of the equation actually opens up the jury to more genuine issues. It'd be all too easy to simply lay the blame at bigotry and let it go at that.

An all-white, all-male jury was the norm in the '50s. As early as 1879, the Supreme Court ruled that the exclusion of blacks from jury selection was unconstitutional (though active and transparent discrimination still continued well into the '60s if not beyond), but the same SC ruling stated that women could be excluded. This wasn't formally reversed until 1979.
