time to re make 'Rebel Without a Cause'

James Franco as Jim, Anne Hathaway as Judy, and Mark Indelicato as Plato.

reply

Are you nuts?

reply

I loved the movie, but I actually kind of like the idea of a remake. But I have to disagree with James Franco.

reply

I disagree with all of it...this movie works because even though yes it's set in the 50s, that can be obvious, it's not a dated movie, remake it and it will be dated, HORRIBLY dated, from the word go. And that's one of the nicer things that would be said about it.

Agreed

reply

Ummm... No. Remakes don't work unless you can do something genuinely different with the new material. For instance: Making westerns out of Samurai films. Something different. Just remaking a film for the sake of remaking it? Why not just watch the original?

"You gonna bark all day little doggie, or are you gonna bite?"

reply

You could remake this movie.
It just wouldn't be the same story.
You'd have to update it for today.
The idea that this move is centered on was way ahead of its time.
Frankly, I think that there's a lot more to say about today's families.

reply

They should definitley re-make it, cuz they could then actually make it good. The original was stupid, and i blame the director for that, did anyone else notice there wasnt a consistent plot in this movie? And then people say it was about dean trying to fit in...the movie took place over the course of one day...wasnt that powerful of a story in my opinion

reply

Then you didn't get the story because people have been relating to it for over 50 years. I doubt 50 years from now people are going to relate to a movie where a bratty teen goes 'Without my cell phone I don't have ANYTHING to do'.

reply

ok when i did my last post i had just finished watching it and was really disappointed but now that im thinking about it more was an ok movie, not a great movie but not a bad movie either...idk there is just something about it that seem pointless to me is all

reply

No.

Hollywood need to come up with more ideas and stop remaking movies.

And James Franco as a teenager?? He's 32 years old!

Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood were 16 and 18 while making this movie.

Juets because a movie is old, doesn't mean anhyone needs to make it again.

Correction: Natalie was only 17 when she did this. Just a year older than Sal Mineo. James Dean was the oldest in that trio. 24 years old.

reply

You're right. Whoops, my mistake.

My main point was James Franco is WAY too old to play a teen.

And I hardly doubt any self respecting Hollywood actor would want to even try and tackle the movie.

I can't imagine Debbie Reynolds in this role. She all sugary sweet in some of her movies that I can't see her play such a complex character. I think Natalie was the right choice.

reply

time to re make 'Rebel Without a Cause'. Anne Hathaway as Judy.

Did you just swear? I'm sick of Hollywood destroying classics. Why they feel the need to do this, I will never know.

Anne Hathaway as Judy??? . OH MY GOD that's funny. Thanks for making me laugh . Or are you serious?
Its bad enough having to see her as Catwoman in the new Batman movie, but to see her destroy a character portrayed by the fantastic Natalie Wood will definetly send me over the edge!

James Francos a brilliant actor, one of the very few great actors around, and the only person that I wouldn't mind seeing portray a character that James Dean did.

Every thread has a "lets remake this!" topic on it. Best thing to do is either ignore it, say no and laugh at the suggestions

LOL thanks for the tip

I wouldn't see the remake, no-one can top Dean, Wood and Mineo

Hello, handsome, is that a ten-gallon hat or are you just enjoying the show?

Name a remake thats better than the original. If you can't make something BETTER then why do it twice? Meh

True Grit was worthwhile, West Side Story's a reimagining of Romeo and Juliet, Superman's based on the Golem of Jewish lore. We're constantly remaking the same things, and interpretation and re-creation is an important part of every art form.

That said, this movie's great and any attempted duplicate would inevitably fall short. Clearly nobody should try to copy it word for word, but the source material of young adult anger and distrust towards society is as relevant as ever. I could definitely see somebody making a good new movie out of this story.

reply

Pride & Prejudice (in my opinion.) I felt like the newest version was artistic and more emotional.

reply

I don't think there should be a remake either but don't make Natalie Woods' performance out to be something that could never be replaced. I like Natalie Woods but she is just plain awful in this movie. Acting lessons greatly improved her after this, but she is just laughable here.

And before you laugh about the comparison to Anne Hathaway as if Hathaway was so inferior you need to consider that unlike Woods in West Side Story Hathaway actually sang in Les Miserables.

NO! I'm so sick of studio's re-making classics and screwing them up. So HELL NO!

reply

Yes, it seems insane although there are times when the movie falls terribly short of the source material. A Good example is what some film historians say about The Maltese Falcon, that it may be the most perfect pure mystery movie ever. I was surprised to discover that it had been made at least twice before with different titles which were completely inferior. Some movies are such great classics that it's virtually blasphemous to remake. I'm sure if they thought there was money in it they could go ahead with remakes of:
Citizen Kane, Singing in the Rain, Casablanca, The Godfather, The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, Monty Python's The Life of Brian, Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, E.T. Jaws, Wizard of Oz, 12 Angry Men (oops, they did that one), Schindler's List and of course The Good, Bad, the Ugly

The thing is that many great movies are valuable because they are dated and therefore reflect the times and the general attitude of society. Someone logically mentioned that these movies are being basically remade by telling similar stories with same basic themes. I'm burned out on remakes as well as comic book (or illustrated novels if you prefer) characters. I love some of them but it seems as if Hollywood hits big with something they rush to make as many similar films possible. It's all business.

One more point: Much of this is perception based on age. Younger people need to imagine in a relatively short time (next generation) will be wanting to have some they see as classics remade. Let's began planning on The Dark Knight (surely we can get better and newer actors for that). Why won't they hurry and get Donnie Darko redone? How About that oldie, Inception, which was good for it's time but now outdated. A New Titanic, LOTR, Harry Potter Series, Spider Man, Toy Story and Schrek

I would bet that a large portion of the young people will feel the way many old movie fans feel when they start messing with movies they love with actors that bring back memories from that time in their life when they 1st saw it. I'm just trying to see it both ways because there are a couple of remakes that I suddenly thought of that I prefer. Oh, also sad that so many great foreign films are being missed because of peoples avoidance of subtitles. Most of the good ones become Hollywood remakes and most are inferior. I loved The Departed but still prefer the original, Infernal Affairs. That's my more than 2 cents

Cuz that would be straight-GANGSTA!!! huh, S-Diddy???

Ironically, he'd grown so fat only work-out pants would fit him.

i thought of a freakish way to remake "rebel without a cause." remake it as a gender-bending science fiction film. set it thousands of years in the future, in a matriarchal society. switch the genders of all the characters (the james dean character is female, the natalie wood character is male, etc.). situate the action in and around a space station the size of a small town. instead of setting a scene in an observatory, have one in a holotheatre that shows realistic depictions of life on the half-forgotten home planet, earth. use small space cruisers in place of the automobiles in the original. stage the chicken run as a race into the event horizon of a black hole. and instead of having the three lead characters hide out in a deserted mansion, situate them in the midst of an abandoned (though once inhabited) asteroid or planetoid. instead of using guns, have the characters use phasers.
