Klaatu Barada Nikto

what do you guys think it means?

reply

"I'll take two burgers to go with everything"?

reply

If anything should happen to me, you must go to Gort. You must say these words:

"Klaatu is seriously injured" or "Klaatu must be rescued".

It's pure speculation of course, but in my mind, this sounds apt considering Klaatu's concerns as to what Gort might do without him (ie killed or taken into custody).

reply

It had to be more than Rescuing Klaatu because the robot took her into custody too.

reply

It means that you can take the necranomicon and not wake the army of the dead. Has anyone seen army of darkness?

reply

Reminded me of Army of the darkness also. But that was funny. She remembered the words

reply

Barada is the Russian word for "beard" (though they pronounce it wrong, the accent should be on the last sylable). Nikto is the Russian word for "no one". So it obviously means "Klaatu says no one has a beard!" Gort just doesn't like earthling hair styles.

(What I say about Russian is true. Funny that they picked two words that (almost) came from a real language.)

reply

As someone pointed out, it's a tribute to this film's place in the popular culture that we're still debating it more than six decades later. ThirtyNineWinks is actually half-correct. The Russian translations of the words are, indeed, "beard" and "no one." One of the definitions of "beard" as a verb is to confront, oppose or defy. So conceivably, if Gort were for some reason trained to respond to commands in Russian, the phrase could mean, "Klaatu beards (opposes) no one," which would disarm him. I'd love to know if the filmmakers knew this, but we'll probably never find out.

reply

That's been a joke in my (Russian-American) family for as long as I can remember: "Klaatu is a bearded nobody". If he had put on a fake beard, he could have blended into the earth population without ever being recognized! Gort could have found him by looking for the guy with the fake beard.

"Oh, well" said Zanoni, "to pour pure water in the muddy well does but disturb the mud !"

reply

My guess is "Klaatu needs help."

reply

I think it means "What Lassie? Klaatu is stuck in the well?"

reply

I think it means "Klaatu go home"

reply

Klaatu says; Dance!

Niiiiictooh YEAH!!
