Recommendations for GOOD time travel films!

Other than SOMEWHERE IN TIME, TIME AFTER TIME, and the BACK TO THE FUTURE series does anyone have any other favorite time travel films?
I would also add PORTRAIT OF JENNY, 12 MONKEYS, and THE TWO WORLDS OF JENNIE LOGAN.
I have a pretty good list of time travel books, with Jack Finney's being at the top, but time travel films seem harder to find.
Thanks!

Can you please post that list of time travel books? I'd really like to see it.

Blackadder Back and forth is good and very funny

The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis

I cant believe nobody mentioned "Bill and Ted's excellent adventure" yet. That film is one of the best (in my opinion) that is.

Don't miss 'Grand Tour:Disaster in Time'

Time travel is an extremely popular theme in movies.
Here's a website that lists some t.t. movies:

Time and Again, a book by Jack Finney. That's good!

reply

Frequency starring Dennis Quaid and James Caviezel is good also. Although the characters don't travel through time, their radio communication does, which leads to some interesting changes in the timeline. I won't spoil it any further - check it out if you haven't already!

reply

I second that - Frequency is an excellent, underrated film. I was going to mention it if you hadn't!

reply

Everyone has already mentioned all of my suggestions, but I am going to say Timeline, Somewhere in Time, and Frequency are my favorites.

Also, did anyone mention The Lake House? Not exactly time travel, but close enough.

Mostly I just read books with time travel, and they are very similar to Kate and Leopold. The author is Lynn Kurland and some of her "time travel" books include:

A Dance Through Time
The Very Thought of You
The More I See You
My Heart Stood Still (only a little time travel)
"The Groom Wore Tulle"
"The Gift of Christmas Past"
A Garden in the Rain (My favorite)
Dreams of Stardust
Much Ado in the Moonlight (again, only a little time travel)
and When I Fall in Love

As you can see they are all a bit on the romance side, but they're Paranormal/Fantasy Romance, and also include a lot of ghosts. And they all remind me very much of both Somewhere in Time and Kate and Leopold, and I cannot stop myself from reading them.

Look at the Moon, it is Soaaaaaoooooooooo Beautiful

On the to-see list : Dead Again
On the really-don't-watch-that-crap list : Paycheck

(Hardly time travel... but it deals with time)

"Jumper" is currently playing on the big screen

Nobody has made it into a film, but if someone did a wonderful version of Jack Finney's "Time and Again" I could die happy. :-D And then if they also did "From Time to Time", I would be in heaven!

reply

"Les Visiteurs"(original French title) "The Visitors", both I (1993) & II (1998) but not the stupid American knock-off from 2001 "Just Visiting" all starring that fabulous French actor Jean Reno.
The Visitors I & II were both superior and hilarious movies than "Kate & Leopold" could ever hope to be imho. It could be described as a kind of Monty Python Black Adder cross. Very farcical.
Catch it if you can... may be hard to locate on DVD, depending on your Region.

If you like your time-travel film to be serious, then "Butterfly Effect"... very thought provoking.. a good conversation piece.

ciao ciao

I'm pretty sure it hasn't been mentioned yet, so everyone here should check out Primer (2004). It's a little raw, but it's worth it

The Jacket really twist time and place, and is one of the best films I have seen.
Starring Adrien Brody, Keira Knightley, Kris Kristofferson, Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Groundhog Day is a comedy with confusing time line, starring Bill Murray.

reply

I've got 3 titles for you.

"Quest for Love" is simular to "Somewhere in Time", but is an AU. The main character is an unmarried physicist accidentally zaps himself into a world where he is a married playwright and World War II never happened. His wife is Joan Collins.

"Time After Time" has H. G. Wells building his time machine and it gets stolen by Jack the Ripper who uses it to escape to 1979 San Francisco.

"Biggles: Adventures in Time" has a modern man finding himself being zapped into the past to help his "time twin" in times of extreme danger. When whatever danger is over he gets zapped back to modern day causing trouble with his girlfriend, and coworkers. When he finds himself in danger in modern day, his "time twin" is zapped to help him. It does'nt help that his "twin" is a World War I fighter pilot.

"Millennium" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097883/
with Kris Kristofferson and Cheryl Ladd. I think it bombed at the box office, but I enjoyed it.

reply

I dont think no one has listed the time machine yet?.
And the first one is better than the new one.

But if your into time travel then the time machine is a must.

Yes, similar (VERY) to a story from the Outer Limits 1960s tv show. The one with Martin Landau... The Man Who Was Never Born, 1963. The BEST Outer Limits episdode, IMHO.
Obviously James Cameron loved this episode too!

"Lost In Austen". It is exactly not a movie since it is a mini TV series, and it is not actually time travel since the protagonist goes into a fictitious world, but it has the same sense of "Kate and Leopold" where the guy is charming, handsome and courteous and the girl is, unlike Meg Ryan's character in this movie, is likable, courageous and strong. I definitely recommend it.
And of course the upcoming "The Time Traveler's Wife" should be a good recommendation as well.
