Vertigo

Dropped out because of vertigo is what I heard. Whether that's true or not, it's a shame.

reply

I couldn’t tell you.

reply

Doesn't seem very realistic.

reply

she said its not easy being the "headstar" of the Olympics

reply

Now that I do believe. But it is what it is.

reply

she's looking out for #1 & i'm all for that

reply

Yeah I hear that. Still though, someone signs up for something, they finish the job.

reply

Intense pressure, expectations, the average person can't even begin to understand.

reply

Looks like a cool, insightful documentary. I saw Apollo Ohno speak at a college once, and he was well-spoken and gave a lot of perspective to the Olympics.

reply

I want to see it myself.

As for the Biles controversy, a fellow gymnast being interviewed this morning said that, after a series of especially difficult spins and somersaults, they sometimes experience a sensation they refer to as, "being lost in the air." It's a state of confusion where they begin to make small, but steady mistakes. Maybe that's what someone interpreted as vertigo.

reply

I see.

reply

Whatever it is, I hope she's ok.

She is an extremely likable person, and came to fame very quickly.

This might sound random, but I wonder what kind of toll social media is taking on our celebrities these days.

reply

A big toll. Just like everyone else. I wish it'd stop.

What a selfish coward. Imagine if Kerri Strug just said, nah my ankle hurts. I aint doing shit. Fuck my teammates and my country. Biles is a disgrace to the U.S.

reply

[deleted]

She's one 6 medals for the U.S. which isn't bad for being such a "disgrace".

This is the first event she's backed out of in her career. And was still there to support her teammates.

reply

She knows what's best for herself, and I hope she's okay.

Being a top Olympian means a horrific level of pressure at the best of times, and this isn't the best of times, with the pressure on her as a top medal prospect and the COVID scares in the Olympic Village.

Being mentally tough is part of being a true champion.

That's an antiquated concept. Nowadays it's more about being able to stand up and say you can't handle the pressure mentally when things aren't going well.

A true champion quits to protect their health these days. In the future who knows? It seems "insane" that we as a society are happy to through young athletes into such a circus simply to grade who's "best" by awarding Gold medals and asking athletes to speak to the media.

Long into the future when all athletes are treated equally and are all awarded gold medals for entering their events and are free from any media responsibilities, people like Biles and Osaka will be hailed as great sporting pioneers.

reply

True dat. This is social engineering right here. I could understand if Biles was truly sick and could risk injury by getting "lost in the air", and she really wasn't able to fix the situation, but the way the media and social is taking this and running with it, congratulating her for quitting and instead cheering on her teammates, I can't help but read between the lines and see the big plan.

I mean, the media is giving Biles props for stepping down more than they're giving props to her teammates who stepped up.

reply

I understand your comments about how the media is playing this and agree, but as for the "lost in the air" issue, considering the explosive power she puts into her routines, there is definitely a possibility of serious injury.

reply

Yes I agree with that as well.

A true champion quits

🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ 2021 ladies and gentlemen. There it is.

I feel for this girl if she has mental health issues. I really do. But quitting is not heroic, nor does it make her a true champion. It’s unreal that she’s now going to win a whole bunch of “sportsmanship” awards and be called a “hero” in the media for quitting on her team and her country. If she had to, she had to, but that in no way makes her a hero. The participation trophy generation loves it though.

Keri Strug had 1 advantage that Simone Biles does not. She had Bella Karoly as her coach, the greatest women’s Olympic gymnastics coach of all time, thus far in history. He coached, among others, Nadia Cominica, Mary Lou Retton and Kari Strug. He pre-screened his athletes when they met. He looked them in the eye. He explained in a TV interview: “The Olympics is COMPETITION. You cannot turn a rabbit into a lion. If the fighting SPIRIT is there, you can LEARN the skills.” When the injured Strug started her sprint for the vault, Karoly yelled, “YOU CAN DO IT!!” I discussed that moment with 1 of my wisest friends later. He asked, “Don’t you think he was pushing her to a worse injury?” I said, “No. He saw that she was already committed to the risk, and he was giving her his energy and support to help her.”

Those of us who saw Keri STICK that glorious 1-footed!!! landing saw a true heroine and champion; and not someone who was being advised by a team of agents and marketers who had her post-Games career plan all mapped out, like so many other expectant Olympic champs, like Carl Lewis (remember him?).

Keri Strug is the kind of stuff—the right stuff—that makes America great.

“The Olympics is COMPETITION. You cannot turn a rabbit into a lion.

Interesting. Reverse that and you have the interesting question of whether someone with four Olympic and nineteen World Championships gold medals can turn from a lion into a rabbit.

reply

I teared up a little reading this.

Now that Biles actually DID return for individual glory (as so many predicted she would, sigh), I am forced to retreat to the true days of Olympic glory when the athletes had the right stuff and no one was kneeling.

reply

Thank you, Anubis. The Olympic Games are an important part of my life. The Greeks, with the advice of the Oracle at Delphi, created them to bring peace to their city-states; but they also serve to inspire us all. Was there ever another moral Fuck You than Jesse Owens taking 4 Gold Medals in front of Hitler in the 1936 Berlin Olympics?

reply

She should ask Jimmy Stewart for some advice.
