One of the main problems is the level of brainwashing that they have been exposed to.

I recently referenced a 1985 13min video about an ex-KGB defector explaining ideological/cultural subversion and the four steps used to brainwash the public to such an extent that if you were to show them irrefutable and incontrovertible evidence in front of their eyes that they would still refuse to believe it.
