What Movie Chat needs...

...is a way for user to block certain topics (Trump, Biden, massmurderers and serial killers, etc) from trending.

reply

I've submitted that request.
I would even be willing to PAY for a service that would allow discussion on movies just to put a dent in the trolls.
I also believe the trolls/bots would shrink knowing we could bypass their attempts to keep their celebrity/show on top of the trending.
But we know the owners are just as happy with clicks from trolls as they are from the genuine chatters.

reply

So discussions you don't like or want to see are trolls/bots?

Typical simplistic view. Ever thought more people want to discuss those subjects.

As shown below you don't like, don't look at it, don't view it, don't read it and don't respond to it. I am amazed how many people are triggered by an image on a screen that they don't even have to interact with.

reply

You're not being fare.
This ability would allow us to streamline what we see.
I can't understand why you would be so negative about it.
Think of it this way. Many people like older movies and would like to discuss them. However they are outnumbered both in population and computer/moviechat use. Their interests are pushed aside just because of popularity and they could easily just edit shows or people out until the trend eventually shows only what interests them.
I suppose it would require a lot of personal data compilation that someone would have to pay for but I would like an honest estimate instead of hostile opinion.

reply

Very few people would pay for that, the troll count will stay the same.
Personally, it's not a good idea to close yourself off from people with differing opinions or even trolls.

reply

I disagree.
We already have to pay extra just to block phone and text messages which are just trolls operating in a different strategy.

reply

This ability would allow us to streamline what we see

You mean censor

Their interests are pushed aside

How? Literally and I do mean literally no one is stopping anyone going to any movie page and starting a discussion. No one.

If you don't want to interact with anyhting on the trending page then don't. Go to the specific board and start threads. I don't see what is difficult about that.

There is plenty off the trending I don't interact with. Guess What. I don't and go into a thread I want to discuss or have an opinion on.

reply

sokar, you are obviously just trolling now.
I wish to control WHAT I SEE.
Censoring would be me controlling what YOU see.
You, on the other hand, want to force me to watch what I don't want to see.
THAT is censorship.

You fail to see the importance of letting people choose their product without having to sample yours.

reply

People with cash can troll...

reply

Cant you just "scroll past" / "ignore" the politicians etc , in exactly the same way that you would "move on to next one" when seeing a movie you're not interested in ?

Also theres the ignore list for the actual threads from these people .

Also seeing as it looks like you're new here , dont get your hopes up with the request - changes from Our Lord Jim are few and far between.

also all new accounts get accused of being a sock puppet account of the trolls , so just brush that off till it stops.

reply

It's not about scrolling.
It's about choosing what we are interested in OVER someone else's need to be heard.
Even if the site were limited to "movie" chat only and not celebrity I would feel the desire to limit the TYPE of movies I want to discuss. And as others do the same my targeted subject and audience would increase.
Very similar to algorithms only the user, not the site, would control the content being offered.

reply

so you're saying if we got this "Filter out politics for those who dont want it" mod ...

..you'd then start asking for further changes to only show you the TYPE of movies you want to discuss?
how would that work?

reply

That is what YOU are practicing NOW and you are so terrified of losing the option that you have taken to spewing presumptive lies about me.
I never indicated that was anyway near my wishes and have stated here otherwise.
I've reviewed your posts and you have NOTHING to offer anyone.

reply

spewing presumptive lies about me.
thats very funny : "I would feel the desire to limit the TYPE of movies I want to discuss"
your words.

you have NOTHING to offer anyone.
how about the one just above when i gave that friendly advice about sock puppets , totally giving you the benefit of the doubt that arnt actually a sock puppet .

Although i see from this immediate jump into hostility , you probly are not new here , just someone starting a new account

reply

Good luck with that.

I agree with you but I think they won't act on this.

reply

There's a place for this thread. But if you are that easily triggered from a picture there isn't anything this site can do that will fix you. You are the problem! Toughen up, don't be so sensitive. Have thicker skin, it's only a picture, it can't hurt you. My kid got over being scared of the dark in one night. Can you be better than a 6-year-old?

reply

I myself am not interested in Trump or Biden discussions, for example. But they take space from trending topics no matter what I do. I'd rather see topics that interest me. Its a simple filtering function. I'm not participating in those discussions in any case, so you won't lose anything if I filter them off.

reply

This is a free message board that's run off of ad revenue, So unless the owners want to start charging a premium for personalised content, or create a new sub-forum for non movie, etc related topics, you'll continue to see it on the trending.

Best thing to do is if you don't want to participate in it......then don't. Really that simple.

.....and yes, I know, I just put him at the top of trending again.......sorry about that!!!!!

reply

charging a premium for personalised content

whilst i think this is a something of nothing issue not worth addressing ,

I will point out it would be a pretty simple and cost free functionality change for the developer to implement.
its not new persanalised content ,
its just a second ignore list focusing on page IDs instead of User IDs
could even go in the same ignore list actually.

reply

What movie chat needs is a trending list of users who whine about movie chat.

reply

Haha agreed!

reply

If you are triggered by a picture then maybe you shouldn't be on the internet.

reply

I already explained the situation and what's wrong with it. Can't help you if you don't understand.

reply

I get it. I think some people just aren't used the MC format. If IMDb was still around, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

reply

What they need is moderation to keep the trolls to a dull roar.

What MovieChat needs...

IS NO POLITICAL DISCUSSION WHATSOEVER!!!

I mean, MOVIEchat is a website devoted to discussing MOVIES and TV shows, and their cast and crew if necessary.

WHOSE bright idea was it to include politicians into the discussion, eh? It just leads to arguments and heartache!

reply

You can't separate movies from politics these days. Every movie that comes out forces some woke nonsense in your face.

reply

Unfortunately, yes. But surely it's not down to politicians?

reply

The definition of politics is broad.

phenomena like "Political correctness" seems to be happily included for some reason.
I think the name is fooling people who dont know what a metaphor is.

reply

WHOSE bright idea was it to include politicians into the discussion, eh?

Late reply here, but this site basically imported all the old IMDb message boards, which IIRC, also had sub forums for political/current events discussion. It also imports any new profiles/entrys on movies,tv shows & people being made currently on IMDb.

reply

I dont understand why people are triggered by pictures. too many snowflakes these days...

reply

What Moviechat needs........are posters with thicker skin.

Don't want to talk about politics fine ....this ain't Sudan (yet?) Ignore such posts, and bump up 'Star War's threads instead

No-one is stopping you talking about any movie you want. I don't like topics about cunts like Brad Pitt, Quentin Tarantino or Paul McCartney....so guess what?

I don't post on there.

It's as simple (or difficult) as that?

reply

"are posters with thicker skin"

Its not a question of thicker skin, already addressed this issue in earlier post.

"Ignore such posts, and bump up 'Star War's threads instead"

I don't bump up threads if I don't have anything sensible to say, so its not a solution. It would just decrease the S/N ratio of this site and make it even more unusable.

reply

I'm afraid it's really not the problem you're making it out to be.

And tbh, if it wasn't for the political stuff on here, you'd pretty much have MovieChat to yourself. Personally, I like to alternate between threads that interest me (be they movies and/or politics) it's no biggie to me, having to scroll a page or two to find what I want (like I said, I don't like 'Tarantino' topics.....therefore don't partake in such) if you don't like political stuff....keep away from them.

Simples?

reply

IT IS ABOUT THICKER SKIN. Do you think I like seeing trans dudes walking with tits, a beard, and some hairy legs? It's freaking weird and so hard to explain to my kid. But guess what, we can't erase what we don't like to see. It's part of life, the good and the bad. If you like something join and have fun but if you don't like something then ignore it and move on. Don't go out of your way to make trouble for people you don't know just because you're too much a pussy who didn't get alpha male lessons from your daddy.
