YMCA is a gay anthem. Everybody knows that.

Ridiculous that Trump is trying to steal the world's most notorious queer song.

reply

You mean it's a song played at every single wedding since it's creation.

reply

stop spreading truths

reply

JFC I live in California and nobody plays YMCA at their wedding reception. Billy Idol's "White Wedding" is much more popular. Why the hell would anyone play a song about naked men in gym locker rooms at a wedding?

reply

I worked as a mobile DJ for 30 years.

YMCA was and is a song that fills the dance floor.

White Wedding not so much.
.

reply

I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE HEARD OR HEARD OF YMCA PLAYING AT A WEDDING....NOT A WEDDING FEATURING A BRIDE ANYWAY.

reply

Popular dance song. But not a heterosexual wedding song.

reply

WTF are you talking about?? So only gay people at weddings can dance to YMCA? Give me a fucking break.

reply

No, I'm saying that it might make sense to play at it at a gay marriage (which I think are pukeworthy to begin with - not a fan of gay marriage). But why would you play a song about sweaty males in a gym at a wedding? It makes no sense to me, unless you're just playing a bunch of random dance music.

reply

By this logic it should never be heard at every birthday party, bar mitzvah and sporting event under the sun and yet it’s a damned fixture at all of them.

M.A.G.A!

Young man, there's no need to feel down
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground
I said, young man, 'cause your in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy

Young man, there's a place you can go
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

It's fun to join in the M.A.G.A.!

Victor Willis of Village People says the hit is an anthem to Black male friendship – and his wife threatens to sue those who say otherwise

If you thought that YMCA by Village People was a gay anthem, think again. According to Victor Willis, who wrote the lyrics, the famous song is entirely heterosexual – and anyone suggesting something to the contrary should “get their minds out of the gutter”.

“Come January 2025,” Willis added on Facebook, “my wife will start suing each and every news organisation that falsely refers to YMCA, either in their headlines or alluded to in the base of the story, that YMCA is somehow a gay anthem because such notion is based solely on the song’s lyrics alluding to elicit [sic] activity for which it does not.”

YMCA appeared on Village People’s third album, Cruisin’. It was an international smash hit, getting to No 1 in 17 countries on its release in October 1978. A much-loved staple at sports events, wedding receptions and student discos, it has sold 12m copies. In 2020 it was preserved for posterity by the National Recording Registry of the US Library of Congress as “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”, and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

That same year, Donald Trump started playing it at rallies, and has done so consistently ever since, often dancing to it and another Village People hit, Macho Man. While most musicians have reacted with horror to Trump using their songs, Willis says that YMCA has “greatly benefited”.

Willis said on Facebook: “The financial benefits have been great … YMCA is estimated to gross several million dollars since the President Elect’s continued use of the song. Therefore, I’m glad I allowed the President Elect’s continued use of YMCA. And I thank him for choosing to use my song.”

reply

Do you know what "Cruisin'" means? 🤣

Yeah, sure it also means driving your car around. But it was also gay slang for looking for a sex partner.

Sorry, most the members of Village People were "out" gays. The songs producer Jacques Morali was gay. He's the one who assembled the Village People. Dude. it began as a gay act.

Willis capitalized on that even if he may have been straight himself. He obviously never came out in 1977 and said it wasn't a gay song because he was making too much money off it. Now he's an old grandfather and he's trying to rewrite history.

"Cowboy"? "Leatherman"? "Sailor"? Those were gay club themes from the 70's. "Leatherman"? Really? Straight folks dressed up like leathermen?

Stop trying to rewrite history.

reply

The gays did try to pervert the meaning of the song because gays always try to pervert everything, even rainbows.

reply

No, as I said, Jacques Morali recruited them as a troupe to appear in trendy gay clubs.

The song was about sex hookups at the YMCA despite Willis' protests now that he's embarrassed as an old straight man.🤣

They had a goddamn member known as "The Leatherman".

Jacques Morali recruited the Village People by advertising for attractive gay singers and dancers in New York City's Village Voice. Morali was inspired to create the group after seeing the costumes at a costume ball at a gay disco in Greenwich Village.

Morali, a French songwriter and producer, and his business partner Henri Belolo created the Village People.

The group's name comes from Greenwich Village, a neighborhood in Manhattan known for being a gayborhood.

The group's characters were a symbolic group of American masculinity and macho gay-fantasy personas.

The group's early releases were popular in dance clubs before going mainstream.

The group's biggest hit was "Y.M.C.A.".

The hetero writer of the song says it's not a gay anthem despite the band's thrust (sorry) targeted a gay audience.

People say it is a gay anthem with no evidence.

I'm going with the songwriter on this.

reply

Dude, the composer knew what the group was all about when he joined. I also find it hilarious that he waited 40 years to drop that bombshell. "The Village People" are not gay!!! 🤣

I just gave you the evidence. Jacques Morali advertised for gay singers and dancers and Willis showed up. He played a gay macho persona "The Cop". C'mon, it's obvious what this guy is trying to do now that he's old and married.

reply

I didn't say the group wasn't gay or that Willis said the group itself wasn't gay (he never said it wasn't), what I clearly said is that the hetero songwriter says *YMCA* is not a gay anthem and that there's no double entendre to it.

None of that can be disputed.

reply

"What'choo talkin' 'bout, Willis?"

I think Willis is getting old and maybe he's a "Christian" now and he's trying to rewrite history.

David Hodo, the "Construction worker", says Victor Willis is full of shit. 🤣

David Hodo, who played the construction worker in the band Village People, said that the band was gay and that their music was often played in gay underground clubs. Hodo also said that the song "YMCA" was written to celebrate gay men.

That song is full of double entendre which Willis obviously wrote for his gay producer, Jacques Morali, his gay band mates, and his gay audience.

They have everything for young men to enjoy
You can hang out with all the boys

Please.

reply

Why can't he just enjoy the song?

The YouTube view counts for YMCA versus say, In The Navy, seem to suggest lots of other people are enjoying it too.

reply

As the teens used to say when they would rate a record on American Bandstand, it has a catchy beat, good lyrics and it is easy to dance to.

It is a fun song. I’d rather listen to YMCA instead of all the rap crap kids listen to today or good lord, Taylor Swift!

reply

Can you imagine on Taylor Swift song still being popular 40 plus years from now?

reply

I'm with you on that one!

reply

Comedian Russell Peters said it's the "White People's National Anthem". lol

Is Willis' wife gonna sue Russel Peters? Black male friendship? 🤣

So what?

reply

Huh? There's a controversy all a sudden with conservatives claiming it's not a gay anthem. What other fucking topic should we post on this board? What, this isn't gay enough for you? 🤣

reply

Next you’ll be claiming that Freddie Mercury was gay.

My dad grew up in the 30s and 40s. I remember him telling me when I grew up that to swim in the YMCA pool back then all the boys and men were required to be naked and swimsuits weren’t allowed.
