He didn't know what he was doing. He didn't know what to do in office or what his powers were from inexperience.

Because he couldn't. He though he would become king-like once elected and will start giving orders and everyone would do. And then saw that there is congress, senate, court that can block anything he orders. Which they often did. But he still was able to do lots of shit. As they were blocking only his most crazy desires.

Difference this time is that back then Republican party were not traitors and russian assets and were kinda keeping him in line. Now we have half that party in congress go full on " heil putin" and pledged their asses to russian service. And this is dangerous because if democrats will not control both Congres and Senate - republican rats can do lots of damage. And going from democracy to dictatorship is not that hard once dictator has full power.

When they had Boris Yeltsin in russia for 8 years - they had some sort of democracy. They had free press, people were allowed to criticize government, president. They had court and elections. And people could chose who to vote for for mayors, governors.

Then putin came. And immediately and slowly started taking everything under control. They closed their free press and take everything under government care. Then cancelled elections of mayors and governors. Then kept and kept forbidding everything.

And then eventually russia woke up being lighter version on north korea. Everything is forbidden. No opposition, no free press, no elections. They put 75-yars old grannies in jail for simply liking anything anti-war on social media or going on protests. They go with searches and opened criminal case on a female older doctor because her patient ratted her out to police saying she expressed her anti-war thought in conversation while treating that patient. Or something.

Everyone in russia rats on everyone to police like it was in USSR. And if anyone thinks it can't happen in USA if trump and GOP will take Congress and Senate - they are wrong. It's very easy.

In the modern era, democracy is destroyed from within by changing its institutions, laws, judiciary, etc.. Most people, like yourself, aren't aware that it's happening since it's done slowly by chipping away.

A great book to read is "How Democracies Die" which gives details about the process in several countries including the U.S..

The book also warns that the first attempt to destroy democracy usually fails. But, the second or third attempt is usually successful since the autocrat has learned from his mistakes and makes adjustments. If you read the Republican far-right extremist authoritarian blueprint "Project 2025", you will see those adjustments!
