It's not incriminating evidence in his mind, it's HIS PERSONAL PROPERTY.
That's why I was not at all surprised by the witnesses claiming he'd said, "it's mine not theirs"
I doubt he even had any concrete plans of selling the info or using it in any practical way. He just knew it was "important stuff," so he took it just for the satisfaction of owning "important stuff."
The problem, biggest among many, is that he almost certainly kept them unsecured and made no secret of their existence, meaning Putin could easily have had agents in Mar a Lago photographing it all sometime in the past year and a half. Hopefully, HOPEFULLY, the FBI had informants warning them of any exposure risks.
Indeed, such a risk might be what prompted them to action
