One thing to keep in mind about this case.
Now that the verdict has been rendered, and all the evidence made public, it's easy to see what a slam-dunk this case was. Any reasonable person could see what the verdict would be, and the jury followed the evidence to come to the correct conclusion. No one with intelligence and honesty is disputing that.
All that said, this case would never have come to trial if it was up to Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, who decided to drop all charges against Smollett in exchange for Smollett performing community service. Luckily, due to public outcry, in addition to the Chicago mayor and police, a grand jury was formed, which indicted him on six other crimes, and the trial happened.
But it does bring up the question of what Kim Foxx's agenda is, and what other cases has she placed her thumb on the scales of justice - cases that aren't in the public spotlight like this one was. And she's not alone. There are reports from all over the country about DAs who are going soft on crime - but only if the crime fits their view of the world where everything is seen through a racial prism.
When you send the message that the system isn't going to prosecute certain crimes committed by certain individuals, it only makes sense that that will result in more of those kinds of crimes happening. Which, of course, translates into innocent people suffering.
