Based Scarlett Johansonn: “You didn’t choose to be a politician, you’re an actor"

https://pagesix.com/2021/03/26/scarlett-johansson-says-political-views-shouldnt-affect-career/

“I don’t think actors have obligations to have a public role in society,” Johansson recently told The Gentlewoman in their spring and summer 2021 issue.

The “Black Widow” star added that she thinks it’s “unfair” to place the expectation on those who don’t want it.

“You didn’t choose to be a politician, you’re an actor,” she said.

Johansson, 36, emphasized that her job was to connect with viewers through her art.

“Your job is to reflect our experience to ourselves; your job is to be a mirror for an audience, to be able to have an empathetic experience through art. That is what your job is"

I suppose it is something about people wanting that Rock guy to run for office. He could get more votes than Kamala but still lose.

reply

She says her political opinions shouldn't' influence her career. Well said but the opposite should also be observed. Celebrities should keep their political opinions private and not try to influence us.

reply

I think she also wants to express the fact that celebrities arent forced to reveal their political ideas, like someone in the "woke group" asks them to do.

reply

If you're influenced by people because of their celebrity then that's your problem. They shouldn't be told to shut up any more than any other person.

reply

well said! i just posted the same thing , then saw your post :)

reply

But people are being told to shut up. People get fired by their employers for stating their politics/beliefs online and/or in their private lives all the time. Why should celebrities be any different?

reply

"Celebrities should keep their political opinions private and not try to influence us."
why?
You dont have to listen , and if you do choose to listen you dont have to be influenced.

reply

Because other people that have political opinions aren't afforded the same access to the media to make a case for their opinions. The simply fact is the more you hear something the more likely you are going to be persuaded to accept and believe it whether it is true or not, whether it is good or not. Think back to Nazi Germany, prior to Hitler's propaganda machine rolling into high gear the average German didn't want to lock up Jews... but tell the people long enough that Jews are sub-humans and pretty soon people will accept it as fact. If celebrities were educated and had well thought out ideas then it wouldn't be an issue but in most ever instance the celebrities spouting off are simply doing it because it is the fashionable opinion within their little group of friends and rarely has any of them thought through what they are saying. Of course because they are actors they are pretty good at sounding like they are authorities on the subject the the parroting... It is dangerous to have them trumpeting nonsense whether about one political view or another, it is best if they simply shut up and do their job which is to entertain.

reply

But what happened to "free speech" ?

"I dont like what you said but I'll die defending your right to say it" etc?

You seem to want anyone who can be heard muzzled.

Whats your limit for how many people can listen to one other person before they become a "dangerous celebrity mouthpiece?"

10? 100? 100,000 ?

reply

Free speech applies to the government censoring what you say. If the studios were smart they would be placing limits on everything that could be said by any of the actor in their films from a purely financial reason. Anytime some moronic celebrity spouts off on something controversial they alienate some people from pissing away their money on the movie and hurting the studios bottom line. Was much better in the old days of Hollywood where the stars were kept muzzled and couldn't do any harm.

reply

That is an excellent point.

reply

How does that make her based? She is as liberal and woke as all the others.

reply

Not really. She is surely pro-Dem,but she often pisses the woke people off like when she refuses to be against Woody Allen,or when she defended her choice when she was attacked because she played the role of a transgender, and the same when she played a anime character.

reply

she apologized and said she had privilege

reply

She's not only hot, she's also smart.

reply

she is as liberal and woke as the others

reply

Like others said, she is a Dem,but non an extremist,so we can apprecciate that

reply

wow , a bit of sensible middle ground.
an acknlowedgement that not all dems are card carrying commies!
Thank you sir!

reply

Why are you supposing i didnt knew that? Maybe you should be the one to aknowledge that not all the Anti-Dem people are awful then!

reply

I'm not supposing didnt knew that
I was congratulating you on being one of the very few who clearly can see that.

reply

She's right. Actors are like everyone else, citizens who have the right to vote and be as politically active as they choose to be, and they have no more obligation than anyone else to broadcast their views or try to influence others.

The only real difference between an actor and a normal schmuck is that nobody cares about our opinions, and frankly, nobody cares about actors' opinions either. But because they're public figure, sometimes their publicists will say they can get press by making political statements or being outspoken, and political/charitable/environmental groups will beg celebrities to get involved because they can get press. So there's a bit more pressure on someone like Johanssen to make political statements than there is on us (there's none on us), but if she wants to resist all those requests and suggestions she's totally within her rights if she wants to keep her trap shut about politics.

As long as it's her idea, of course, because she's been working for Disney for years and Disney doesn't like its employees to do anything controversial.

PS: Was the word you were looking for "biased"?

Well this is the internet so instead of people learning to use the correct term they just start using the wrong term until it become the correct term. :(

reply

[Snerk!]

Well, that IS how language evolves. Did you know "nice" used to mean "foolish or stupid" in Shakespeare's time?

reply

Based is the correct term, but I guess this is the internet so instead of people learning what they're actually reading, they just start disparaging others, even though they are the ones that are wrong.

reply

The word is based, meaning from a foundation. Not changed by the prevailing wind. Based (rooted) in your opinion, not caring what others think.

reply

They absolutely have no obligation. But Johansson has openly voiced her political opinions, and so just like everyone else (but on a bigger scale), and just like everything else she has ever voiced publicly, she will and should be judged based on it. She is not above that judgment just because she's an actor; if anything, because more people will hear her opinion, she has a greater responsibility to take more care with what she says.

Since she has been acting from childhood, she is perfectly aware of this. This sounds like she wants a pass for the things she's said and also wants to keep saying whatever she wants without consequence - even knowing that her reach and influence are far greater than that of the average person. To which I can only respond, no and too bad. No one asked for her opinion on politics, but if she gives it, she's going to be judged for it, that's how it works.

And the fact is, as an actor making millions of dollars, there's clearly a lot more at stake and a lot more bias regarding her political affiliations. So pretending they're just your opinions without addressing this is dishonest.

reply

Biased. The word is "biased". "Based" doesn't even make sense the way you used it.

Yes, it matters.

Sometimes it's wonderful, but, mostly, the internet gets a D+ when it comes to grammar and spelling.

reply

The word is based. You're out of touch.

reply

Incorrect. Show me the earliest usage of "based" in the sense you claim.

It's been around for at least a decade. I can't help if you haven't been exposed to it. But now you have and now you know. This is a common use of the word "based."

https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/based/

In 2007, his group, The Pack, released their debut album, Based Boys. In a 2010 interview in Complex magazine, Lil B described his new definition of based: “Based means being yourself. Not being scared of what people think about you. Not being afraid to do what you wanna do.”

reply

It is slightly old (mid 2000s) slang. Basically means the opposite of cringey. I think that there is some very old literary use of the word that was misinterpreted into the slang. It is one of those slang words that makes people look foolish when trying to define it. ummm ... never mind.

reply

It's just another dumb right wing buzzword.

reply

Do you jolt out of bed every morning on fire with political rage?

reply

She's right. Actors don't have an obligation to speak out on public issues.

Sounds like she's one of the smart ones who understand that no matter which side she comes down on, she's going to piss off half of her fan base. If I was investing money into making a movie, I wouldn't want to hire anyone who is going to keep potential customers away.
