I don't like to think of terms of anyone being "the best" when it comes to the arts as there are so many factors in play.
I like the Chili Peppers even though a lot of their songs have a sameness about them. Flea is good at what he does, given the Chili's started at a time of 6 string guitar Gods, Flea has done well to make the bass a big part of his bands sound.
He's not even the best bassist in RHCP.
shareThis thread reminds me of when music magazines used to run yearly polls back in the 70s, readers would vote for best band, best guitarist, best drummer, best bass player etc.
And I found them utterly meaningless, because fans of certain bands would vote for that band in every category..
For example, Led Zeppelin,best band...best bass player, John Paul Jones...best singer, Robert Plant...best guitarist Jimmy Page.....and so on.
A lot of the people voting were never objective enough to say " I love Jimmy Page, but this guy from a different band may actually be better".
I found it a very blinkered mentality...even fans of bands like Bros would vote for the band in every category.
I love Zeppelin, but John Paul Jones is an average bassist.

shareThere really isn't THE best whatever. Be it in music, sports or acting. Define the best on what aspect. There are many excellent musicians ou there and they all have skills we can appreciate. Only headline grabbing journalists peddle the "best" myth.
