The most overrated director of all time?

Probably

reply

Not a bad choice. Mine would be Denis Villeneuve.

reply

Tarantino

reply

Thank you! I honestly cannot see what people see in Tarantino.

reply

I too loathe Tarantino. His first few films were somewhat interesting, but then I rented the two Kill Bill films. I got through Kill Bill, Part I and realized he was a hack that I had no interest in whatsoever. I never did watch Part 2, or indeed any QT film thereafter.

reply

Tarantino is an excellent writer/director, his work is and will be taught in film schools, just like De Palma, Scorsese, Pekinpah, Kubrick and Kurosawa. His stories are all about human emotion, the action is just a byproduct. J.J. Abrams movies are all about action, the stories are there just to connect the spectacle.

reply

I'll leave both Abrams and Tarantino to those that like them.

reply

He's not a bad director but all he's done are franchise movies. His only original one was a Steven Spielberg knockoff.

reply

And his franchise movies are usually un creative with rehashed or dumbed down plots

reply

His production company is called "Bad Reboot" for a reason.

reply

He certainly was a half-successful con artist when it came to making "good" movies. Yeah, he managed to charm people with some of his Star Trek films and the TFA, but if you take a closer look at his work, he doesn't have an original idea bone in his entire body.

JJ is the son of two major Hollywood producers, meaning he was born and raised among their quieter version of "hollywood royalty," and never had to truly work to get into the position he has now. He had connections from the beginning.

reply

He’s not so much a bad DIRECTOR, but he’s not really good at developing stories. If he stuck to filming someone else’s script, he’s be fine, but he has way too much of a creative hand in the movies he makes.

reply

Correct. He can't do story even if his life depended on it. And moviemaking is storytelling.

reply

I dunno, I think too many people already hate him for him to be considered overrated. I’d say Nolan is the most overrated.

reply

Nolan is definitely overhyped, and very overrated.

reply

Nolan is brilliant. Maybe you should try rewatching the movies he made.

reply

I did. Quite a few of them. He is very overhyped.

reply

It depends on how somebody takes "overrated". I think it's perfectly possible to think a given artist is both brilliant AND overrated depending on how much hype they have. All it takes is for the hype to outpace the artistry and they're "overrated".

From that perspective, I get how somebody would think Nolan is overrated.

reply

How could he possibly be? He's constantly referred to as the guy who ruins franchises and have you ever seen him on a list of best directors?

reply

Everything after Cloverfield has been terrible.

reply

Cloverfield sucked as well. Just another stupid "found footage" Godzilla remake.

reply

I thought 10 Cloverfield Lane was quite good, but of course, Abrams didn't direct that one.

reply

He only slapped on the UFO alien ending in order to market it as a sci-fi Cloverfield , the original movie didn't have that.

reply

Well, it's true the ending was the worst part.

reply

The only things he can properly do is hack someone else's work and invent mystery boxes that are never resolved.
